“We’re staying out of the primary,” said state Democratic Party Chairwoman Nancy DiNardo. “These are real local issues and local voters have to decide who they want to represent them. So, as a paper, we don’t get involved with primaries.”

Second-term incumbent Dennis Bradley will face local Methodist Church leader Herron Gaston.

Gaston is the party’s endorsed candidate in this race.

Bradley lost his endorsement after he was federally indicted this spring, following allegations that he conspired to commit wire fraud. Senate Democratic leadership also stripped Bradley of his committee leadership duties.

“Because of the problems he’s had, the legal problems he’s had and now he’s on trial, the delegates at this convention decided not to support him,” DiNardo said.

The state’s Democratic Party said that in addition to endorsements, they do not support specific candidates in the primary. Residents are still being encouraged to vote on August 9.

“It’s important, every election is important, you have to voice your choice,” DiNardo said. “You have a primary, but the bottom line is the November election and winning those seats. That’s what I’m looking for. Yes, you can win a primary, but you can win in November.”
