Family of bears spotted playing in CT backyard

AVON — A family of bears visited an Avon family Sunday, spending a few minutes playing in the family’s backyard.

The bears, including some cubs, fell into the hammock and climbed onto the chairs placed in the yard.

Justin Mathews, who sent a video of the encounter, said he and his family were sitting at the kitchen table, enjoying a morning cup of coffee, when the bears were spotted.

“It was interesting to watch them play from a distance,” Mathews said. “It’s great to see them enjoying themselves.”

Mathews said bears were not particularly common in New York City, where he resides.

But now he has seen them twice when visiting family in Avon.

A few years ago, a bear passed by while he was sitting outside, walking between him and the house, he said.

According to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protectionthere have been 7,618 bear sightings across Connecticut so far in 2022.

That includes 352 in Avon, officials reported.
