So far the SMART alliance is living up to its name and its founder\u2019s brilliant vision. As the org\u2019s quarterback, Pearson remains focused on passing the power of legal pot to any open movers and shakers in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.com\/industry\/cannabis-jobs-report\">rapidly-growing field<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Mapping SMART\u2019s national campus network<\/h2>\n<p>SMART boasts eight chapters, including Pearson\u2019s alma mater, Brown University, as well as Rutgers University, The University of Texas-Austin, and Cornell, which now has a medicinal plant cannabis chemistry program thanks in part to SMART\u2019s on-campus advocacy. Chapters have also bloomed from Stockton University in New Jersey, which offers a <a href=\"https:\/\/stockton.edu\/general-studies\/cannabis-studies.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">minor in cannabis<\/a> studies, and at agricultural sciences powerhouse Tuskegee University in Alabama, which is currently studying <a href=\"https:\/\/budsfeed.com\/product\/tuskegee-university-industrial-hemp-program--1582933167537x543088000672727040\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">industrial hemp<\/a> with support from SMART\u2019s free resources.<\/p>\n<p>Pearson plans to expand the org\u2019s national footprint by enabling cannabis research and opportunities for every campus he can reach. \u201cWe want to be a hub for the best information resources and to lower the barrier to entry for folks,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center\">\n<p>\u201cI never did this to make a boatload of money. The lifelong student-athlete suffered a string of concussions and was experiencing side effects he couldn\u2019t ignore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went to some doctors around Brown\u2019s campus who recommend I stop playing football,\u201d he remembers. \u201cI brought that back to my coach and they basically tried to incentivize me to keep playing. They said, \u2018We\u2019ve had people who get concussions and we can just strengthen your neck with these exercises.\u2019\u201d Pearson wasn\u2019t persuaded, mainly because he\u2019d already suffered concussions in high school.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\" id=\"h-the-coaches-said-why-didn-t-you-tell-us-you-had-concussions-we-would-have-never-recruited-you-and-it-was-one-of-those-moments-like-wow-thanks-for-making-me-feel-worse-about-this-but-i-m-glad-i-played-my-cards-like-i-did-because-you-really-don-t-care\">\n<p>\u201cThe coaches said, \u2018Why didn\u2019t you tell us you had concussions? He also began immersing himself in New England\u2019s budding cannabis scene in his free time.<\/p>\n<p>After classes, Nadir would scan LinkedIn for Black or Brown faces in the space that he could potentially connect with. He even drove to nearby campuses for 420-friendly events, using his new camera and editing skills to get in the door. The camera was also great bait for getting the attention of the biggest influencers in the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time I took pics, they had to get in contact with me to get them,\u201d says Nadir, fondly remembering his clever networking strategy. His first big event was the <a href=\"https:\/\/masscann.org\/the-boston-freedom-rally\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Freedom Rally<\/a> in Boston, one of the largest annual gatherings of cannabis enthusiasts in the country.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cI just went, grabbed my camera, and I would hit up vendors for interviews. I asked them all one question: \u2018What would you say to someone who says cannabis is bad?&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Pearson applied the work ethic he\u2019d crafted on the football field to his new passion and saw results quickly. \u201cI knew that anything I can practice I can be good at,\u201d he asserts. And after the success of Colorado\u2019s recreational cannabis bill, he knew it was only a matter of time before other states followed the loot. But even with legalization gaining steam around him, Pearson knew he would need more help to connect the big dots aligning his&nbsp;idiom for SMART.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img width=\"886\" height=\"498\" alt class=\"wp-image-180246 has-ll lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/this-ivy-leaguer-left-football-behind-to-normalize-cannabis-on-campus-5.jpg,compress&amp;w=550 550w, https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/this-ivy-leaguer-left-football-behind-to-normalize-cannabis-on-campus-5.jpg,compress&amp;w=740 740w, https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/this-ivy-leaguer-left-football-behind-to-normalize-cannabis-on-campus-5.jpg,compress&amp;w=1100 1100w, https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/this-ivy-leaguer-left-football-behind-to-normalize-cannabis-on-campus-5.jpg,compress&amp;w=1480 1480w\"><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-pot-power-circle\">The pot power circle<\/h2>\n<p>As Nadir\u2019s influence grew on campus, it wasn\u2019t enough to rub shoulders with lobbyist and Massachusetts Recreational Consumer Council (MRCC) President Kamani Jefferson, who took the SMART leader under his wing after a cold email on LinkedIn. After meeting attorney, entrepreneur, and restorative justice advocate Shanel Lindsay, he had another all-star in his orbit and felt ready for takeoff. Lindsay helped the \u201cYes I\u2019m For It\u201d campaign\u2019s fight for legalization and social equity measures in Massachusetts, one of a handful of states prioritizing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.com\/news\/politics\/leafly-seeds-of-change-2021-report-rates-states-on-marijuana-equity\">social impact<\/a> applicants for licenses.<\/p>\n<p>As his power circle expanded, Nadir felt it was time to bring all of the key local players he knew together. With the right team, he knew SMART could push even more research, legislation and normalization forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t equipped at the time,\u201d he admits. \u201cI was speaking to all the right people, the medical school at Brown, the deans, but the federal illegality of it all made it difficult.\u201d That\u2019s when he recognized an opportunity to be the bridge between this exciting new space and his school\u2019s prestigious campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was the only 18 or 19-year old at these events, and I thought, \u2018Where\u2019s the under 21 crowd? Oh, they\u2019re not here? Cool, let me go get them.\u2019\u201d His next move was obvious: \u201cI need to make a cannabis association on campus!\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Legitimizing the leaf<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" alt class=\"wp-image-180251 has-ll lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/this-ivy-leaguer-left-football-behind-to-normalize-cannabis-on-campus-6.jpg,compress&amp;w=550 550w, https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/this-ivy-leaguer-left-football-behind-to-normalize-cannabis-on-campus-6.jpg,compress&amp;w=740 740w, https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/this-ivy-leaguer-left-football-behind-to-normalize-cannabis-on-campus-6.jpg,compress&amp;w=1100 1100w, https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/this-ivy-leaguer-left-football-behind-to-normalize-cannabis-on-campus-6.jpg,compress&amp;w=1480 1480w\"><\/figure>\n<p>SMART officially launched Pearson\u2019s sophomore year after he learned he only needed 10 signatures to get a new club approved. \u201cI made sure that I got 50 people, because I knew it was gonna be a higher hurdle.\u201d From there, he planned to use his \u201cIvy-league-ness\u201d like a shield from the stigmas that most cannabis users still face.<\/p>\n<p>Early on, SMART worked to \u201ceducate, not promote\u201d cannabis normalization and contributed to the Cannabis Center of Massachusetts\u2019 Dr. Marion McNabb\u2019s initiative to conduct <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cannabisbusinesstimes.com\/article\/national-marijuana-survey-massachusetts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">qualitative surveys<\/a> about cannabis that didn\u2019t break federal laws. <\/p>\n<p>In late 2020, the team launched a SMART directory on AirTable, which includes a profile system and resumes to promote new connections as the org continues to host marquee events and local meetups.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\" id=\"h-as-we-start-to-pair-people-with-jobs-and-opportunities-we-want-to-be-able-to-have-a-place-to-come-in-and-say-ok-where-are-the-other-people-from-brown-in-this-network-people-rely-on-their-college-to-develop-new-connections-and-opportunities-so-i-saw-that-directory-was-a-big-need-not-just-to-have-chapters-but-to-have-engagement-within-our-community-internally\">\n<p>\u201cAs we start to pair people with jobs and opportunities, we want to be able to have a place to come in and say, \u2018OK. Where are the other people from Brown in this network?\u2019 People rely on their college to develop new connections and opportunities. So I saw that directory was a big need.
