{"id":1528,"date":"2021-10-04T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-04T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenentrepreneur.com\/article\/388913"},"modified":"2021-10-04T15:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-10-04T15:00:00","slug":"most-cannabis-users-are-stoners-is-that-a-bad-thing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thcinct.com\/?p=1528","title":{"rendered":"Most Cannabis Users Are &#8216;Stoners&#8217; \u2014 Is That a Bad Thing?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/most-cannabis-users-are-stoners-is-that-a-bad-thing.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"a-pos-0\">A new survey has found that the majority of cannabis consumers in 2021 could be classified as \u201cstoners,\u201d and that maybe we need to rethink what exactly that \u201cstoner stereotype\u201d should be in the first place.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"a-pos-1\">Carried out by the cannabis industry analysis firm&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bdsa.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BDSA<\/a>, the survey found that at least 62% of consumers who use inhalable cannabis products use them at least once a day, and that while around 60% of consumers in adult-use states consume in the evening, 30% of consumers are still \u201cwake and bakers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"a-pos-2\"><b>RELATED:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenentrepreneur.com\/article\/380359\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_self\">More Proof That&nbsp;Cannabis Users&nbsp;Aren&#8217;t Lazy and Unmotivated<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>The stereotypes<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"a-pos-3\">The BDSA survey also found that while the findings may illustrate that the majority of consumers fit the \u201cstoner stereotype\u201d of being daily cannabis users, more than 80% have at least some college education, and around 50% hold down a full-time job. In addition, while the stoner stereotype may also bring to mind young people, 40% of these daily consumers are over the age of 40, according to the survey.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"a-pos-4\">In a sense, the image of a \u201cstoner\u201d which is presented by the study is one that could apply to any law-abiding citizen who likes to have a glass of wine \u201cat least once a day\u201d \u2013 especially in the evening hours.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"a-pos-5\">According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.winebusiness.com\/news\/?go=getArticle&amp;dataId=207060\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a 2018 survey<\/a>&nbsp;by Sonoma State University\u2019s Wine Business Institute, 50% of the sample population (1,191 respondents) said that they drink wine several times per week or daily. In addition,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/892642\/wine-and-liquor-purchasing-by-education-us\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">research has shown&nbsp;<\/a>that people with a college or post graduate degree are much more likely to regularly purchase wine than people with only a high school education, and that they spend&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uploads.strikinglycdn.com\/files\/997afd5a-11cc-4b8c-bac8-94e2d8dcf6f0\/Demographics%20and%20Wine%20-%20Sample%20Pages.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more than three times<\/a>&nbsp;as much annually on wine.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Breaking it all down<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"a-pos-6\">In other words, like daily cannabis users, daily wine drinkers are more likely to have a college education and be employed. So is there a class or education-based stigma at play here with cannabis that doesn\u2019t hold up to the facts?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"a-pos-7\">According to Kelly Nielsen, BDSA\u2019s VP of Insights &amp; Analytics, it may be time to update that stoner stereotype.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"a-pos-8\">\u201cWhat we\u2019re seeing is that the heaviest users are those that are experienced in the cannabis space and not necessarily the new entrants, but those heaviest users don\u2019t fit a quote unquote historical stoner stereotype,\u201d Nielsen said. \u201cSo if you think of this concept of young, burnout users, we\u2019re seeing that a majority of the heaviest users are consuming daily but aren\u2019t fitting that stigma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"a-pos-9\">She also stated that while historically heavy, daily cannabis use is more associated with inhalable cannabis, \u201cone of the most interesting things that we\u2019ve seen over time is that the consumers who are either edibles users or prefer edibles are bringing edibles into their daily lives as well.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"a-pos-10\">She added that \u201cwe\u2019ve seen that 62% of inhalable cannabis users are daily users, but also 40% of edibles users are daily users. So over time we\u2019re seeing that this has absolutely made its way into habitual life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"a-pos-11\"><b>RELATED:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenentrepreneur.com\/article\/380324\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_self\">The Fastest-Growing&nbsp;Cannabis Consumers&nbsp;May Surprise You<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>Is time to update the typical stoner stereotype?&nbsp;<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"a-pos-12\">Nielsen described these daily users as an older, more established population. She also said that while the cannabis industry is making major moves to try to bring in new users and users who consume less cannabis or in lower doses, it\u2019s the heavy users that are powering the industry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"a-pos-13\">\u201cI think in any industry there\u2019s always a desire to bring in new users but new users to an industry aren\u2019t going to be the heavy users.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"a-pos-14\">Or as BDSA wrote in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bdsa.com\/controversial-statement-alert-most-cannabis-consumers-should-be-classified-as-stoners-based-on-consumption-frequency-and-behavior\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a blog post<\/a>&nbsp;this week, \u201cthe \u201cstoners\u201d among us are not just a sizable segment of the consumer base, but they have also played a crucial role in driving the growth of legal cannabis markets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"a-pos-15\">They added that while there is a segment of cannabis consumers that are drawn towards low-potency products, \u201chigh potency products have been a mainstay in the industry and continue to drive sales.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"a-pos-16\">There is some reason to believe that some of these high figures for getting high are connected at least in part of the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cannigma.com\/cannabis-news\/more-people-are-getting-high-at-work-during-covid-poll-finds\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">A survey<\/a>&nbsp;published in November, 2020 found that 46% of all respondents reported increasing their cannabis consumption since the pandemic began. The latter study also provided data to shore up the assertion that the \u201cstoner stereotype\u201d may need to be reconsidered, now that cannabis has such a greater level of acceptance in the workplace.
