(MTL Cannabis)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The small cultivation company headed by brothers Mitch and Rich Clement is celebrating its one-year anniversary in October, the same month as Canada\u2019s third anniversary of adult-use legalization.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d say that that\u2019s kind of the essence of who we are,\u201d she elaborated. \u201cBack in the day, access was illegal. We needed passion then, and we need passion now.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo legalization actually is a welcome relief. But I would not be honest if I said that there is a day that goes by where we don\u2019t say, \u2018Are we sure?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now available in nine provinces, flower fans have been sure of MTL\u2019s Sage \u2018N\u2019 Sour strain. (MTL Cannabis)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The deal will allow them to expand cultivation space, human power and other resources to produce more strains. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody only knows us with our kind of signature strain, Sage \u2018N\u2019 Sour,\u201d she said. \u201cBut we dropped Cookes \u2018N\u2019 Cr\u00e8me in Quebec. (Adobe Stock)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Major players like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/search\/shop?shopCategory=brand&amp;shopName=Aurora%20Drift\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aurora<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/search\/shop?shopCategory=brand&amp;shopName=Canopy%20Growth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canopy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/brands\/tilray\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tilray<\/a> all shuttered facilities this year, reporting deep losses while setting their sights instead on mergers and acquisitions. <\/p>\n<p>Canopy bought <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/search\/shop?shopCategory=brand&amp;shopName=Ace%20Valley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ace Valley<\/a> and Supreme; Tilray merged with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/search\/shop?shopCategory=brand&amp;shopName=Aphria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aphria<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/search\/shop?shopCategory=brand&amp;shopName=HEXO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hexo<\/a> acquired <a href=\"http:\/\/leafly.ca\/search\/shop?shopCategory=brand&amp;shopName=48North\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">48North <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/search\/shop?shopCategory=brand&amp;shopName=RedeCan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Redecan<\/a>, and Aurora\u2019s CEO recently told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/medical-marijuana-more-profitable-than-recreational-aurora-cannabis-ceo-interview-2021-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Insider<\/a> they\u2019re now betting on medical, not adult-use cannabis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe industry is still in its infancy and the dust is still settling,\u201d said Lucas McCann, chief scientific officer at Toronto-based consulting firm CannDelta. Gone are the turf wars characterized by building out massive cultivation facilities in the hopes of producing massive quantities of product. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now we\u2019re seeing a bit of an oversupply effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A bit of oversupply might be a bit of an understatement. As of December, Health Canada reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/drugs-medication\/cannabis\/research-data\/market\/dried.html#tbl-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1.1 billion grams of unsold cannabis<\/a>. That number has come down since, but there are still hundreds of thousands of grams of unsold flower and edibles sitting in inventory, according to Health Canada.<\/p>\n<p>As prices have dropped, sales have grown through the pandemic. Fuelled by retail growth in populous provinces like Ontario and B.C. and more flexible and customized delivery and online ordering options. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-innovation-and-new-products-defined-year-3\">Innovation and new products defined year 3 <\/h2>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ndsJ6IjJm3?amp=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Headset data<\/a>, sales were dominated by mainstream flower successes like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/news\/strains-products\/why-is-pink-kush-such-a-big-deal-in-canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pink Kush<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/search\/shop?shopCategory=brand&amp;shopName=Pure%20Sunfarms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pure Sunfarms<\/a>, pre-roll pinners like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/search\/shop?shopCategory=brand&amp;shopName=Back%20Forty%20Cannabis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Back Forty<\/a>, value brands like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/search\/shop?shopCategory=brand&amp;shopName=Shred\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shred <\/a>and bulk bags from brands like Homestead Cannabis Supply. <\/p>\n<p>Pre-rolls, in particular, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/news\/canada\/why-are-pre-rolls-so-popular-with-consumers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">saw a boost this year<\/a>, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/search\/shop?shopCategory=brand&amp;shopName=RedeCan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Redees<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/search\/shop?shopCategory=brand&amp;shopName=7ACRES\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">7Acres<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/search\/shop?shopCategory=brand&amp;shopName=Color%20Cannabis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Color <\/a>among the top sellers.&nbsp;Non-flower products were more diverse than ever this year, too. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/search\/shop?shopCategory=brand&amp;shopName=Wana%20Canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wana<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/search\/shop?shopCategory=brand&amp;shopName=Bhang%20Canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bhang<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/search\/shop?shopCategory=brand&amp;shopName=Spinach%20Cannabis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spinach <\/a>were among Canada\u2019s most popular edibles brands this year. <\/p>\n<div class=\"my-xxl wp-block-leafly-blocks-leafly-related-articles\">\n<p><h2>Related articles<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Headset also highlighted new fast-acting options and formats like lozenges, sublingual strips, and full-spectrum edibles making their way to the market.<\/p>\n<p>Vape carts are filled with more sophisticated and flavourful oils than ever, with premium live resin options and carts containing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/news\/canada\/cbn-is-canadas-new-trending-cannabinoid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lesser-seen cannabinoids like CBN<\/a>. There are more concentrates options too, from bubble hash to wax.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-popularity-and-perils-of-craft-cannabis\">The popularity and perils of craft cannabis<\/h2>\n<p>Craft brands like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/search?q=dunn+cannabis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dunn<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/search?q=carmel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carmel <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/search?q=organnicraft\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Organnicraft <\/a>flexed their muscles this year, boosted by networks like Shelter and sought after by shoppers happy to spend a few extra dollars on premium products. <\/p>\n<p>It hasn\u2019t been easy for craft producers, many of whom were hesitant to transition from legacy and\/or medical cannabis to the new adult-use model, according to the Craft Cannabis Association of BC.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" alt class=\"wp-image-181721 has-ll lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/cannabis-legalization-year-3-welcome-to-the-hunger-games-3.jpg,compress&amp;w=550 550w, https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/cannabis-legalization-year-3-welcome-to-the-hunger-games-3.jpg,compress&amp;w=740 740w, https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/cannabis-legalization-year-3-welcome-to-the-hunger-games-3.jpg,compress&amp;w=1100 1100w, https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/cannabis-legalization-year-3-welcome-to-the-hunger-games-3.jpg,compress&amp;w=1480 1480w\"><figcaption>(Craft Cannabis Association of BC via Instagram)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201c\u2026the barriers to entry are still extremely high, including high costs across the board, banking and insurance issues, strict regulations, challenges with local municipalities, an undeveloped supply chain. There are real challenges differentiating craft products from others on the market due to the federal marketing restrictions,\u201d wrote director Sarah Campbell in an email. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe process is long and rather arduous and not for the faint of heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/news\/canada\/excise-tax-reform-craft-cannabis-canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">craft producers launched Stand for Craft<\/a>, a letter-writing campaign to ask that high excise tax rates be reduced to allow small producers who can\u2019t operate at a loss for very long a fighting chance at long-term success.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-retail-store-locations-exploded-investments-soar\">Retail store locations exploded, investments soar<\/h2>\n<p>More attention and investment was poured into store experiences this year, said Krista Raymer, co-founder of Vetrina Group. As in-store buying opened up post-lockdown, lifestyle-oriented merchandising assets are being tested in stores, largely for the first time. <\/p>\n<p>In Ontario, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/news\/canada\/provinces-struggle-number-cannabis-retail-stores\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">store numbers increased beyond 1000<\/a> this year, shelves filled with products of the same category are gradually being replaced by eye-catching branded focal points, like the old school grocery store elements at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/brands\/superette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Superette<\/a> stores, like fridges and produce baskets.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" alt=\"bright and colourful grocery style store. (Superette, Stackd Market, Toronto)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a push back from moving all of our communication from digital platforms with our customers to also include a more tactile, physical experience,\u201d Raymer said in a phone call. \u201cIt helps our customers make decisions more confidently, and also know what to anticipate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But, she adds, that doesn\u2019t mean technology has lost its value this year. It\u2019s more important than ever but geared more toward building a steady cache of quality, customized recommendations to each shopper in a way that enhances customer experience.<\/p>\n<p>Retail chain Fire &amp; Flower\u2019s Hifyre platform, for example, is designed in part to use a customer\u2019s preferences to make insightful recommendations for future purchasing, rather than asking customers to scroll through product categories on menus in-store or on iPads. Those enrolled in the company\u2019s Spark Perks program are recommended products based on what they\u2019ve bought and liked so far.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat Hifyre IQ and Spark Perks allowed us to do is really look at how we can recommend products to consumers that we know they\u2019re going to like,\u201d said Matthew Hollingshead, chief innovation officer at Fire &amp; Flower and president of HiFyre. <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" alt class=\"wp-image-181726 has-ll lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/cannabis-legalization-year-3-welcome-to-the-hunger-games-5.jpg,compress&amp;w=550 550w, https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/cannabis-legalization-year-3-welcome-to-the-hunger-games-5.jpg,compress&amp;w=740 740w, https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/cannabis-legalization-year-3-welcome-to-the-hunger-games-5.jpg,compress&amp;w=1100 1100w, https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/cannabis-legalization-year-3-welcome-to-the-hunger-games-5.jpg,compress&amp;w=1480 1480w\"><figcaption>(Fire &amp; Flower)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cAnd then based on their purchasing behaviour, what they\u2019ve looked at, what they\u2019ve liked, what they\u2019ve reviewed, we can also look at how we can optimize that product offering to them and make sure they\u2019re getting something they\u2019d love versus just picking something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Store experiences and product recommendations could be the differentiators which will define the next phase of the cannabis industry, which will likely mean some right-sizing on the retail front, particularly in Ontario.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-social-equity-campaigns-are-on-the-rise\">Social equity campaigns are on the rise<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to the excise tax campaign, there\u2019s hope in the next year for more reasonable purchasing limits on cannabis drinks and more investment in educating the public about topics like unregulated products or the health risks associated with cannabis compared to alcohol.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Advocacy group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.ca\/news\/canada\/why-canadian-cannabis-isnt-inclusive-yet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cannabis Amnesty requested a racial equity assessment<\/a> that would measure the impact of legalization on racialized communities, and there is hope too that the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/programs\/consultation-cannabis-regulatory-issues.html\">consultation<\/a> by Health Canada will yield more inclusion of Indigenous entrepreneurs and communities in the regulated cannabis regime.<\/p>\n<p>As for Larry, and the rest of the MTL Cannabis team, they share the dream that the industry will continue to improve.
