There he launched Tidal Leaf Farms, a greenhouse micro-producer that received its licence in June 2020. <\/p>\n<p>To him, the prospect of sustainable growing in his home was enticing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLots of people have [told me] don\u2019t get into outdoor, just try to get into indoor,\u201d he says. \u201cBut we\u2019re supposed to be, as a nation, moving towards sustainable stuff. (Kieran Delamont)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>That has not been without its challenges though. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe temperature, the weather, the hurricanes\u2014it makes it really hard to [grow] outdoors,\u201d he says. Unlike Webster, McMahon grows inside a covered greenhouse that can be rolled open to let the wind blow in. <\/p>\n<p>More often you learn through experience. We\u2019re in [soil] Zone 6, which is comparable to southern Ontario or BC.\u201d says Webster. \u201cThis used to be a big tobacco growing area at one point; cannabis is pretty similar.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Wind and rain aside, Webster says there\u2019s lots going for the region as a cannabis heartland. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have good heat here, especially on this [south-facing] farm,\u201d he says. \u201cWe\u2019ve also got sandier soil, which is well-draining,\u201d and which provides some balance against the wet weather. \u201c[Plants] like a lot of water, but not sitting near the roots.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img width=\"732\" height=\"1024\" alt class=\"wp-image-182506 has-ll lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/photo-essay-cannabis-harvest-season-in-the-maritimes-7.jpg,compress&amp;w=550 550w, https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/photo-essay-cannabis-harvest-season-in-the-maritimes-7.jpg,compress&amp;w=740 740w, https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/photo-essay-cannabis-harvest-season-in-the-maritimes-7.jpg,compress&amp;w=1100 1100w, https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/photo-essay-cannabis-harvest-season-in-the-maritimes-7.jpg,compress&amp;w=1480 1480w\"><figcaption>To protect against the high autumn winds, the plants in Webster\u2019s field are supported by trellises and stakes. (Kieran Delamont)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Good sun and soil aren\u2019t all that\u2019s needed for micros to get their footing in the cannabis industry. Micro-producers like Webster are finding it difficult to get their cannabis to market.<\/p>\n<p>The high cost of sales licences for micro-cultivators means that growers like McMahon and Webster often need to go through bigger buyers first. <\/p>\n<p>Cultivars and crop size seem to be the biggest hurdles outside of licensing costs. (Kieran Delamont)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>But Webster feels hope when he looks at how other craft cultivators are teaming up to meet the necessary scale. He looks to the Kootenays, where Rosebud Cannabis Farms has found a potential solution. <\/p>\n<p>The producer brought <a href=\"https:\/\/stratcann.com\/2021\/09\/25\/kootenay-cannabis-collective-hoping-to-find-path-to-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seven micro-growers together to grow a single cultivar,<\/a> which Rosebud then gets into provincial markets. Some day, Webster would like to see this kind of initiative come out to the east coast.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For now, all McMahon and Webster can do is finish this year\u2019s harvest and start planning for next year. They hope that by the time planting season comes around that some of the business questions will be answered. <\/p>\n<p>If nothing else, Webster will hold onto his belief in the product.&nbsp;\u201cOutdoor field tomatoes always taste better than a greenhouse,\u201d Webster says. For him, it\u2019s the same with cannabis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis,\u201d he says, as he carefully trims the fan leaves away from the bud, \u201chas all the flavour of the soil, and everything that grows into it.
