Daniel Wolfburg, Vail\u2019s former partner and current housemate. \u201cBut he knows something\u2019s different; he sees me going to work from the window.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The decision to retire Vail came in July, soon&nbsp;after state legislators passed a wide-ranging marijuana legalization bill that, among other things, lays out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwichbulletin.com\/story\/news\/local\/2021\/06\/25\/eastern-ct-police-probable-cause-stops-biggest-change-pot-law\/5304532001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">new restrictions<\/a> on how police may establish probable cause for a search of a person or vehicle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong class=\"gnt_ar_b_al\">More:<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwichbulletin.com\/story\/news\/local\/2021\/06\/25\/eastern-ct-police-probable-cause-stops-biggest-change-pot-law\/5304532001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Marijuana will be legal in Conn. on July 1. Vail, besides being responsible for the seizure of a lot of drugs, cash and property, was a lovable dog and great out in the community. [John Shishmanian\/ NorwichBulletin.com]\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cWe\u2019ve lost a great tool in Vail,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Putnam Police Department Chief Chris Ferace said the department has no plans to retire its sole drug-detecting K9.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cThe K9 will still be used for search warrant cases for things like narcotics, not marijuana,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Norwich police Chief Patrick Daley said his department also has no plans to follow Plainfield&#8217;s lead in removing&nbsp;K9s from the force.<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"><\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong class=\"gnt_ar_b_al\">More:<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwichbulletin.com\/story\/news\/2021\/06\/29\/local-hemp-cbd-business-see-potential-legalization-marijuana-connecticut-colchester\/5370701001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">CBD, hemp, and medical marijuana businesses see potential in legalization<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">On Friday, Vail, sporting a blue bandana and a lolling tongue, romped around Wolfburg\u2019s lawn, his eyebrows jumping as he shed copious amounts of pale hair into the air.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cThe department lost a tool, but I don\u2019t have a buddy riding around in the back anymore,\u201d Wolfburg said. \u201cHe helped us seize a lot of illegal drugs, like crack cocaine and fentanyl, and more than $20,000 in drug-related money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">While on the job, Vail was hand-fed only, part of the training&nbsp;a food-reward dog needs to stay sharp. Typically, that meant handfuls of kibble throughout the day \u2013 even when not on the clock \u2013 with the occasional treat throw in for variety.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img gnt_em_img__inset\"><img class=\"gnt_em_img_i\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-src=\"https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/off-the-job-connecticuts-new-marijuana-laws-lead-to-plainfield-k9s-early-retirement-norwich-bulletin-3.jpg\" data-gl-srcset=\"https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/off-the-job-connecticuts-new-marijuana-laws-lead-to-plainfield-k9s-early-retirement-norwich-bulletin-8.jpg 2x\" alt=\"Plainfield police Sgt. Most K9s like Vail, and he\u2019s the only Labrador the department\u2019s had, usually work for 10 years and retire \u2013 they usually live for about 12 years. But Vail put in four years and has another six or so to relax.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_anc\" id=\"gnt_atomsnc\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"loadAnc\" aria-label=\"Newsletter signup form\"><\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Wolfburg, who is still the supervisor of the department\u2019s K9 unit, said Vail, just by the sheer force of his personality, won over residents from both sides of the law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cEven people we\u2019d arrested in the past would say hello or decide they weren\u2019t going to lie about having drugs on their person,\u201d he said. \u201cHe\u2019s got an obsessive personality, laid-back and kind of goofy when he\u2019s not working.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img gnt_em_img__inset\"><img class=\"gnt_em_img_i\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-src=\"https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/off-the-job-connecticuts-new-marijuana-laws-lead-to-plainfield-k9s-early-retirement-norwich-bulletin-4.jpg\" data-gl-srcset=\"https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/off-the-job-connecticuts-new-marijuana-laws-lead-to-plainfield-k9s-early-retirement-norwich-bulletin-9.jpg 2x\" alt=\"Plainfield police Sgt. [John Shishmanian\/ NorwichBulletin.com]\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">On July 14, soon after the retirement decision was made, Vail was called out after drug paraphernalia and packets of fentanyl were allegedly found in a vehicle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cHe ended up finding drugs under the seat of the vehicle,\u201d Wolfburg said. \u201cI\u2019m hoping there\u2019s still a future for the K9 drug-detection program here. But without a doubt, Vail has been the most successful drug-detecting dog&nbsp;the department\u2019s had.
