Connecticut Attorney General William Tong sent<\/a> letters to several Massachusetts cannabis
\ndispensaries, telling them to take down billboards advertising
\ntheir products in Connecticut.  <\/p>\n

Tong asserted that the billboards — which apparently have been
\nposted for several years in one form or another — now violate
\nConnecticut’s new cannabis law<\/a>, which prohibits cannabis advertising
\nunless “the advertiser has reliable evidence that at least
\nninety percent of the audience for the advertisement is reasonably
\nexpected to be twenty-one years of age or older.”  The
\nnew law went into effect in July. <\/p>\n

According to media reports, Attorney General Tong has contacted
\nthe billboard companies as well.  He said<\/a>, “We don’t want big billboards
\nfor adult use to be targeting kids just like we don’t want
\ntobacco companies targeting kids. We don’t want JUUL and vape
\ncompanies targeting kids and we don’t want marijuana
\ndispensaries targeting kids.” <\/p>\n

Connecticut’s new cannabis law includes detailed advertising
\nrequirements.  For example, in Connecticut, cannabis
\nadvertising may not include spokespersons or celebrities who appeal
\nto individuals under the legal purchase age, depictions of anyone
\nunder age 25 consuming cannabis, or toys, characters, or cartoon
\ncharacters suggesting the presence of a person under age 25.
\n The law also limits the use of sports, arts, and other
\nsponsorships and has other detailed requirements on where
\nadvertising may be placed.  In addition, the law requires
\ncannabis advertising to include the following warning:
\n “Do not use cannabis if you are under twenty-one years
\nof age.  Keep cannabis out of the reach of
\nchildren.” <\/p>\n

In October, the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection
\npublished Policies and Procedures for Connecticut’s
\nAdult-Use Cannabis Program<\/a>, which provide further details on
\nthe implementation of the new law.<\/p>\n
