through new cannabis class &#8211; Quinnipiac Chronicle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>Quinnipiac University\u2019s anthropology department will offer students a three-credit course about cannabis next fall.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Anthropology professor Hillary Haldane, who will be teaching the course, said the class aims to help students understand their relationship to other species on this planet, \u201cwhether other animal or plant species, particularly given the climate catastrophe we face.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_74963\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74963\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-74963 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/anthropology-department-to-offer-reality-of-the-world-through-new-cannabis-class-quinnipiac-chronicle.png\" alt width=\"1501\" height=\"381\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-74963\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Amanda Riha<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span>Haldane said the course originated after students expressed interest in the topic through other anthropology courses.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cRather than trying to cover every plant that can be used for medicinal or psychedelic purposes, I thought \u2018why don\u2019t I just focus on cannabis and use that as kind of a case study\u2019 of which I can talk about all the issues related to it and really just extend that module,\u201d Haldane said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>With cannabis becoming increasingly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/portal.ct.gov\/office-of-the-governor\/news\/press-releases\/2021\/06-2021\/governor-lamont-signs-bill-legalizing-and-safely-regulating-adult-use-cannabis\"><span>legalized<\/span><\/a><span> across the country, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/quchronicle.com\/73308\/news\/will-quinnipiac-allow-weed-on-campus-as-connecticut-legalizes-it-the-answer-is-no\/\"><span>Connecticut<\/span><\/a><span> in July, Haldane said it\u2019s important for students to be prepared to live in a world where cannabis is legal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Even though there still are negative connotations when it comes to cannabis, Haldane said any higher education institution has a responsibility to teach anything that\u2019s \u201creal and present.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI think teaching on a relationship with plants and the very way we use plants, and this plant in particular, which is used for so many purposes, and in light of the environmental awareness and climate catastrophe, I can\u2019t imagine not being responsible as a university and not offering course on the reality of the world,\u201d Haldane said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>College students are not unfamiliar with marijuana; 44% of them reported using it in 2020, according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/marijuana-use-historic-high-among-college-aged-adults-2020\"><span>poll<\/span><\/a><span> from the National Institutes of Health.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAnthropologists bring a nuanced and holistic perspective to the study of plant use and related regulation and stigmatization in society, as the discipline upends common assumptions and beliefs,\u201d Haldane said. \u201cWe make the strange familiar and the familiar strange.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The course will look into the use of cannabis across multiple cultures, how the media portrays the plant and the impact the plant has on human behavior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Additionally, Haldane hopes to study the health benefits and disadvantages of the plant as well as giving students the opportunity to \u201cdevelop their own projects related to their particular interest in the plant and its many manifestations.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In Haldane\u2019s opinion, it\u2019s important for students who want to pursue the cannabis business \u201cto understand how sustainable or environmentally friendly the increased legal access to the plant may or may not be,\u201d the professor said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2021\/03\/02\/2185408\/0\/en\/BDSA-Reports-Global-Cannabis-Sales-Exceeded-21-Billion-in-2020-Forecasts-55-9-Billion-by-2026.html\"><span>report<\/span><\/a><span> released earlier this year found that cannabis sales hit a record $17.5 billion in 2020. Additionally, the industry added over 250,000 jobs.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In Connecticut, local colleges like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfsb.com\/news\/cannabis-courses-begin-soon-at-three-rivers-community-college\/article_88c12ef4-3042-11ec-8e17-cbc7e31a51f4.html\"><span>Three Rivers Community College<\/span><\/a><span> have already begun introducing cannabis classes to their students.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, some Quinnipiac students said they are excited about the opportunity to learn more about the plant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhether you like it or not, cannabis is a part of the college experience for a lot of people,\u201d said James Edwards, a sophomore business major. \u201cI think it\u2019d be a fun class to take.
