In each case, the person involved said they had only smoked marijuana, but officials said they exhibited opioid symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>A cluster of cases was reported in October in Plymouth, though officials say incidents have been dispersed across the state. A lab test of some of the marijuana used in one of the Plymouth cases confirmed the presence of fentanyl, a potent and potentially deadly opioid.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"newsletter_signup \">\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-newsletter-widget embed--float-none embed--size-large embed--type-iframe\" data-ads=\"{&quot;wordCount&quot;:50}\">\n<\/figure>\n<\/aside>\n<p>&#8220;This is the first lab-confirmed case of marijuana with fentanyl in Connecticut and possibly the first confirmed case in the United States,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.ct.gov\/DPH\/Press-Room\/Press-Releases---2021\/Officials-From-The-Connecticut-Overdose-Response-Strategy-And-The-DPH-Issue-Warning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a> Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Manisha Juthani.<\/p>\n<p>The warning comes amid news that an estimated 100,000 Americans died of drug overdoses in a year, a number that officials say is linked to the coronavirus pandemic and a <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cassandra-patricia-salvidar-fentanyl-overdose-billboard\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http rel=\"noopener\">drug supply that is more dangerous<\/a><\/span>.
