Return calmed, uplifted, refreshed, and with a botanically enhanced appetite. <\/p>\n<p>The strategems necessary to carry out this task are as varied as the screwballs and nutjobs that you call family. <\/p>\n<p>To help you get through Thanksgiving, I recently polled a group of experienced cannabis consumers to elicit tips, tricks, advice, and anecdotes related to this annual ritual. Contributors have been granted anonymity in the name of holiday household serenity. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-be-prepared-and-don-t-forget-the-weed\">Be prepared (and don\u2019t forget the weed)<\/h2>\n<p>Think through your house exit, your activity, and your re-entrance. You will need a reasonably legitimate excuse to leave, and you will have the odor of weed about you upon your return. <\/p>\n<p>J-man, a certified Thanksgiving safety officer, says: <em>\u201cIf you\u2019re concerned about your breath, be sure to bring some mints or gum with you. I personally recommend cinnamon-flavored gum or mints, as the spice blends in with the Thanksgiving food offerings.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Others offered a list of items to stash in the car, including: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Visine eye drops<\/li>\n<li>Febreze or any other scented spray <\/li>\n<li>Basketball, football, soccer ball, or other sportsballing device<\/li>\n<li>Lighter <\/li>\n<li>Weed <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Above all, bring enough warm outerwear to assure your comfort. A puffy jacket and knit hat usually suffice. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-do-not-bring-edibles\">Do not bring edibles<\/h2>\n<p>Your family can\u2019t handle them. Seriously. Word will get around, someone will insist on trying for the first time, and you\u2019ll spend all evening talking them down. Or explaining why the gummies still haven\u2019t kicked in. Either way, a lose-lose. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-left\">\n<p>Your family can\u2019t handle edibles.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Joints work best because of the pass-around factor and an all-around sense of tradition. Bring a box of 3 to 5, and share. <\/p>\n<p>Vapes are fine, as they offer a more subtle low-odor option. And they make a good conversation piece. (\u201cOoh tell me about that new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.com\/brands\/davinci-vaporizer\/products\/davinci-vaporizer-davinci-miqro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DaVinci<\/a>!\u201d) <\/p>\n<p>No rigs. Or a non-critical food offering that may be procured at a nearby convenience store. <\/p>\n<p>Danksgiving expert Sam advises: <em>\u201cAlways greet your grandma before the safety meeting so you don\u2019t reek when you go in for a hug!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Also: Check in early with that cousin who\u2019s actually a bigger stoner than you. Align your goals. (AP Photo\/Butch Dill)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Know your NFL time slots: The Detroit Lions always play the Thanksgiving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/news\/thanksgiving-day-2021-schedule-games-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">early game,<\/a> followed by the Dallas Cowboys\u2019 extravaganza in <a href=\"https:\/\/cowboyswire.usatoday.com\/2018\/05\/29\/dallas-cowboys-att-stadium-nfl-rankings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jerry World<\/a>. The New Orleans Saints own the late game. This lineup has remained an unbroken tradition since the 1620s. <\/p>\n<p>The Cowboys game is prime time for most safety meetings, as the older folks who might frown on your shenanigans are going to be parked on the sofa bitching about the \u2018Boys not feeding Zeke the ball. <\/p>\n<p>Remember: Nobody cares about the Lions game. Your male cisgender elders will, however, always be cheered by a show of interest in the sporting team from Texas. \u201cHow them Cowboys doin\u2019, Grandpa?\u201d is a question that functions as an alarmingly effective intergenerational bonding mechanism. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-keep-the-exit-excuse-simple\">Keep the exit excuse simple<\/h2>\n<p>No need to make this into a <em>Da Vinci Code<\/em> subplot. \u201cJust going for a stroll\u201d will get you out the door clean, 80% of the time. If a known family narc (though we love them) volunteers to come along, advise them that it\u2019s a \u201ccousins only\u201d walk. \u201cYou and I definitely need some catching-up time this afternoon,\u201d you may say, \u201cbut I only get to see this crew once a year and I really treasure it.\u201d <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-left\">\n<p>It\u2019s just a walk. And it\u2019s cousins-only.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Stacey recalls: <em>\u201cMy sisters and I would tell our parents we wanted to do our own turkey trot. Phrases like \u201cMama Stamberg\u2019s cranberry relish,\u201d or \u201cLet\u2019s go live to Al Roker on the parade route\u201d can mean any number of things. <\/p>\n<p>Stacey again: <em>\u201cMy sisters and I always referred to weed as \u2018coffee,\u2019 so it was always, \u2018Hey I could use coffee with dessert. Anybody putting a pot on?\u2019 That was the signal to leave the stash by the back deck door to \u2018sip\u2019 on.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-setting-is-important\">Setting is important<\/h2>\n<p>Everybody loves to joke about hotboxing, but if you hotbox your brother\u2019s Hyundai you will exit the car reeking of weed\u2014your clothes, your skin, your hair, everything. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-left\">\n<p>Fresh air is Mother Nature\u2019s great evidence eraser.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Walking to a nearby park, vacant lot, or just along the side of the road is usually a better option. I\u2019m pulling on my vape by the time I walk into the garage, exhaling as I open the fridge, and walking back in the house scent-free, with a new bottle of wine. Are we running low on beer? There\u2019s some in the garage. Sparkling water? I\u2019ll go grab it. Need to keep that salad cold? It broke, right as my grandmother was walking by. She looked over my shoulder, concerned that I\u2019d broken some china or something. Wash your hands and face in Grandma\u2019s guest bathroom\u2014her soaps have that powerful old lady rose scent that\u2019s gonna flatten those lingering terpenes like a goddamn steamroller.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-got-no-cousins-treat-yourself-to-some-you-time\">Got no cousins? Treat yourself to some you time<\/h2>\n<p>No cousins available? Existing cousins too uptight? Give yourself a little private time in that guest powder room. Remember to drop a towel over the gap between the door and the floor. <\/p>\n<p>Says Nat: <em>\u201cGoing for a walk was always too suspicious. It was easier to go to the bathroom and sneak vape hits while standing on the toilet to blow it into the vent so your parents don\u2019t smell it.
