(WFSB) \u2013 The nation hit a deadly record for overdoses, mostly from fentanyl.<\/p>\n

In Connecticut, a state lab recently discovered marijuana laced with the opioid.<\/p>\n

Now, police fear fentanyl use will become the new heroin.<\/p>\n

Traci Eburg is especially thankful this week.<\/p>\n

\u201cThree years being clean and sober,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The grandmother says her drug of choice was heroin.<\/p>\n

For a while, she remained clean.<\/p>\n

But when her husband died three years ago, it sent her sobriety into a tailspin.<\/p>\n

\u201cI started ripping right from the get-go. My goal was to join him. I didn\u2019t want to be here. I didn\u2019t want to live,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

A wake-up call led her to treatments and Glorious Recovery, an addiction support group.<\/p>\n

Its mission is bringing people together for good times while celebrating sobriety.<\/p>\n

For months, founder Aleksa Bembnista hoped the deadly overdoses would flatten.<\/p>\n

During the pandemic, she witnessed a new desperation, one where people followed health guidelines to avoid the trappings of addiction and isolation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve heard people basically say, \u2018if COVID doesn\u2019t kill me, addiction will\u2019,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

In the Centers for Disease Control\u2019s latest report of deadly drug overdoses, fentanyl is the culprit.<\/p>\n

The state tracked marijuana laced with the opioid leading to dozens of deadly overdoses.<\/p>\n

Brian Foley, from the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, said he reached out to a former narcotics dealer who\u2019s now in recovery.<\/p>\n

He learned fentanyl gives dealers a competitive edge over commercial and medical pot, and it\u2019s cheap.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018aren\u2019t you concerned, you\u2019re going to eliminate your sales base with overdoses?\u2019 he says, \u2018there\u2019s no shortage of sales base\u2019,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

For Eburg, breaking addiction gives her purpose.<\/p>\n

She recently lost her son to it.<\/p>\n

\u201cReach out. Life is precious,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The state does believe once recreational pot is sold in our state, it\u2019ll eliminate the problem.<\/p>\n

Retail sale is expected to start at the end of 2022.<\/p>\n
