MJ Biz Con returned to Las Vegas. New Jersey, Connecticut, and Virginia passed legalization laws. Mississippi and South Dakota found ways to scuttle legalization votes. <\/p>\n<p>Through it all, we here at Leafly noted the wacky, the weird, and the downright bizarre moments in cannabis. We like to collect them every year in what we call, in a nod to <a href=\"https:\/\/classic.esquire.com\/article\/2020\/6\/1\/esquires-dubious-achievement-awards-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Esquire<\/a> magazine, our Doobious Achievement Awards. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-jerk-of-the-year-us-anti-doping-agency\">Jerk of the Year: US Anti-Doping Agency<\/h2>\n<p>In early July, world-class sprinter Sha\u2019Carri Richardson was suspended from the US Olympic Team and denied a chance to compete in the Tokyo Olympics after testing positive for THC. The responding officer offered to call Leatham a taxi, but the Florida man declined. Instead, he walked away and called 911 <em>again<\/em> to Uber himself home via the county\u2019s emergency response system. <\/p>\n<p>The officer then arrested Leatham and gave him a ride to jail. A search of his person turned up a small amount of cannabis. Drew McKissick, your 2021 Doobious Achievement Award is waiting for pickup at the Leafly front desk. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-now-this-actually-is-a-stupid-game\">Now this actually is a stupid game<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/japantoday.com\/category\/crime\/osaka-youtubers%E2%80%99-stupid-plan-to-live-stream-marijuana-dealer%E2%80%99s-arrest-backfires\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Japan Today<\/a> reported that a four-person team of YouTubers in Osaka attempted to monetize viral videos of cannabis street sellers getting busted. <\/p>\n<p>The video team arranged to meet dealers on a street corner, tipped off the Osaka police, then filmed the dealers getting busted. They kept arresting people on small-time charges, right up until Gov. Phil Murphy signed the new law in Feb. 2021. <\/p>\n<p>One of those caught up: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.com\/news\/politics\/njweedman-is-no-joke-hes-new-jerseys-cannabis-pioneer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NJ Weedman<\/a>, of course. The longtime legalization advocate, aka Ed Forchion, was pulled over for driving his famous Weedman Pot Trooper SUV (pictured above) late on a Saturday night. <\/p>\n<p>The cop ended up arresting the Weedman for what Forchion said were a couple grams and two vape pens. And the cop confiscated $9,000 in cash. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was a street robbery by the Wanaque police department,\u201d Forchion told a reporter with <a href=\"https:\/\/nj1015.com\/nj-weedman-cops-bias-against-legal-pot-led-to-arrest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New Jersey 101.5<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis guy started talking about the gateway theory,\u201d Forchion added. \u201cHe started talking about kids and heroin. He did not like me. In June, Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2021\/06\/11\/pro-trump-pundit-charlie-kirk-says-getting-marijuana-delivered-to-your-home-is-actually-slavery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">went off<\/a> on a bizarre anti-weed rant during a conference in Dallas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe live in a place where you can have, literally, weed delivered to your front door. It\u2019s like, \u2018What?\u2019 And somehow, \u2018Oh that\u2019s liberty,’\u201d Kirk said. <\/p>\n<p>Kirk then added, \u201cNo, that\u2019s actually slavery!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later on, Kirk backtracked on his original\u2026er\u2026claim: \u201cAw, okay\u2026that\u2019s a form [of slavery]; it\u2019s a form of being subservient to something that actually controls you.
