They hear about CBD from other pet owners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Albin is a veterinarian at the Pieper-Olson Veterinary Hospital in Middletown, and current president of the CT Veterinary Medical Association. That raises Albin\u2019s hackles.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctpost.com\/local\/article\/Report-2-dogs-treated-by-vets-likely-ingested-13629812.php\"> <strong>RELATED: Marijuana sickening dogs a growing problem in CT<\/strong> <\/a><\/p>\n<p> <!-- hearst\/article\/content\/relatedStories.tpl --> <\/p>\n<section class=\"relatedStories\" data-progressive=\"true\"><\/section>\n<p><!-- e hearst\/article\/content\/relatedStories.tpl --> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe concern is that most CBD products because they\u2019re being sold as dietary supplements there is no regulation that makes these companies guarantee what\u2019s in their products,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- Missed: ad --> <\/p>\n<p>CBD is a non-psychoactive marijuana derivative and it wasn\u2019t until 2014 that it was available for study.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, official studies on the effects of CBD on pets have been few and far between.<\/p>\n<p>One study out of the Colorado State University&#8217;s College of Veterinary Medicine &amp; Biomedical Sciences found that dogs can tolerate CBD and that it may have some efficacy for epilepsy.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- Missed: ad --><\/p>\n<aside class=\"article--content-inline\">\n<aside class=\"zone\"> <!-- hearst\/home\/mostPopular.tpl --> <!--e hearst\/home\/mostPopular.tpl --><!-- src\/business\/widgets\/hearst\/collection\/widget.tpl --> <!-- e src\/business\/widgets\/hearst\/collection\/widget.tpl --><\/aside>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Published earlier this year, McGrath found that \u201c89 percent of dogs who received CBD in the clinical trial had a reduction in the frequency of seizures,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/cvmbs.source.colostate.edu\/results-from-cbd-clinical-trial-to-assess-efficacy-on-seizure-frequency-in-dogs-encouraging\/\">University of Colorado<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Albin said he has seen a slight increase in marijuana overdoses since the Connecticut legalized weed for medical purposes in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Veterinarian hospital group VCA, which has 17 locations in Connecticut, <a href=\"https:\/\/vcahospitals.com\/know-your-pet\/marijuana-intoxication-in-dogs-and-cats\">said in 2018<\/a> that \u201cthe increased accessibility to the drug has led to an increase in accidental exposure in pets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most cases involve an edible form of cannabis, like a candy or chocolate, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avma.org\/KB\/Resources\/Reference\/Pages\/Cannabis-Use-Pets.aspx\">American Veterinary Medical Association said<\/a> most danger for pets comes from related issues: \u201cSeveral deaths have been reported due to cannabis toxicity, and these appear to be the result of associated complications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> <!-- Missed: ad --> <\/p>\n<p>In the case of a marijuana overdose, most of the time, all a vet can do is make sure the animal is safe and well hydrated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c In most instances they have to ride it out,\u201d Albin said.<\/p>\n<section id=\"articleBottom\" class=\"article--content-zone bottom\"><\/section>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s probably not a good idea to give your dog CBD.
