Welcome back to The Week in Weed, your Friday look at what’s
\nhappening in the world of legalized marijuana.<\/p>\n

Mississippi continues its march (crawl?) towards legalizing
\nmedical marijuana.  Ohio legalization advocates collect more
\nsignatures.  A new governor in Virginia may mean changes in
\nthe state’s cannabis program.  Could hemp help in the
\nfight against COVID?  And finally, marijuana makes its way
\ninto a political ad.<\/p>\n

MISSISSIPPI<\/h3>\n

Regular readers know we’ve been following this situation
\nwith interest for some time now \u2013 if you need a quick recap,
\nsee here.<\/a>  This week, the Mississippi
\nHouse passed<\/a> an amended version of a bill to
\nlegalize medical marijuana.  The bill now heads back to the
\nSenate.<\/p>\n

OHIO<\/h3>\n

Meanwhile, in Ohio, The Coalition to Regulate Marijuana Like
\nAlcohol turned in over 29,000 additional signatures<\/a> in favor of an initiated
\nstatute legalizing adult-use cannabis.  The group turned in
\nmore than 200,000 signatures in December, but recently learned it
\nneeded about 13,000 more.  Once these signatures are
\nvalidated, the statute goes to the legislature.  If lawmakers
\ndon’t pass the statute as written, we’re looking at a
\nballot initiative.  Stay tuned!<\/p>\n

VIRGINIA<\/h3>\n

Lots has been written on what the Democrats’ defeat in
\nVirginia means for the party’s chances in November’s
\nelections.  But what does it mean for Virginia’s budding
\ncannabis industry?<\/a>  If some pre-filed bills are
\nanything to go by, things could look much different than they do
\nright now.  The state’s social equity fund could be
\neliminated; retail sales might only be allowed in those areas that
\nopt in, and law enforcement might be able to use the odor of
\nmarijuana to conduct a search without a warrant.  None of
\nthese measures are law yet, but they indicate that the road ahead
\ncould have more twists and turns than supporters expected.<\/p>\n

COVID<\/h3>\n

A study from Oregon State University indicates that hemp<\/a> could prevent the virus that causes
\nCOVID-19 from entering the human body.  Good news, if
\ntrue!<\/p>\n

AND FINALLY<\/h3>\n

As cannabis becomes legal in more jurisdictions, we expected to
\nsee more discussion of it in political ads.  We didn’t
\nexpect to see a candidate actually smoking<\/a> on camera.  Gary Chambers, a
\ncandidate for the U.S. Senate from Louisiana, lights up a blunt and
\nlights in to the War on Drugs.<\/p>\n
