But on Monday, The New York State Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) <a href=\"https:\/\/cannabis.ny.gov\/news\/office-cannabis-management-launches-new-certification-and-registration-system-and-expands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> the program is now open to patients for \u201cany condition that the practitioner believes can be treated with medical cannabis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a huge win for patient activists\u2014who\u2019ve long-maintained that science supports broader access to cannabinoids as a first-line treatment.<\/p>\n<p>In California in 1996, activists pitched medical cannabis to voters as a terminal illness palliative. A court ruling affirmed a doctor\u2019s First Amendment right to recommend the schedule 1 drug for any condition they deemed fit; after a good-faith examination.<\/p>\n<p>Subsequent medical marijuana laws in other states came with narrower criteria for accessing the life-saving botanical. Many American states have unscientific and cruel medical cannabis laws that disqualify most potential patients. For example, Georgia only allows high-CBD\/low-THC oil for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmcc.ga.gov\/faqs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">terminally ill<\/a> AIDS patients.<\/p>\n<p>New York\u2019s decision takes the government out of the doctor\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.com\/news\/politics\/did-new-york-really-ban-delta-8-thc\" class=\"wp-block-leafly-blocks-leafly-single-inline-block leafly-inline-related-story\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"border border-deep-green-alt border-l-0 border-r-0 my-xl p-md font-bold\">\n<p>Related<\/p>\n<p>Did New York really ban delta-8 THC?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is terrific to see the Medical Cannabis Program expand so vastly with the launch of the new certification and registration program and the ability of practitioners to determine qualifying conditions as included in the MRTA,\u201d said Cannabis Control Board Chair Tremaine Wright.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.com\/learn\/legalization\/new-york\">New York<\/a>\u2018s notoriously strict medical cannabis program has been loosening up lately.
