Ned Lamont on Tuesday signed the bill to legalize recreational marijuana in the state, town officials last week voted to at least temporarily ban any recreational facilities from opening up here.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Chatfield, who has served as Prospect\u2019s mayor for 44 years, said the town\u2019s Planning &amp; Zoning Commission voted unanimously on June 16 to prohibit any recreational establishment from opening shop.<\/p>\n<div id=\"paywall\">\n<p>The unanimous vote came a day before the state Senate voted on the final approval of the bill on June 17. Chatfield said the decision is a six-month moratorium, following the passage of the bill.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- hearst\/article\/content\/zone.tpl --> <!-- hearst\/article\/content\/embed.tpl --> <\/p>\n<section class=\"article--content-embed automatched\" data-eid=\"item-96887\"> <!-- amp-exco-5debc2de-4d40-450f-aeb7-0467e3a9df76 --> <\/section>\n<p><!-- e hearst\/article\/content\/embed.tpl --> <!-- e hearst\/article\/content\/zone.tpl --> <\/p>\n<p>Since recreational facilities would not be able to open in Connecticut until late 2022, it\u2019s not clear if the commission is planning to extend the ban.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- Missed: ad --> <!-- Missed: ad --> <\/p>\n<p>Planning &amp; Zoning officials could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Lamont <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctpost.com\/news\/article\/Lamont-signs-bill-making-CT-the-19th-state-to-16265359.php?src=rdctpdensecp\">signed<\/a> the legislation Tuesday, legalizing possession and use of marijuana for adults ages 21 and older. The new law goes into effect in phases, starting July 1, when it will become legal for adults 21 and older to have an ounce-and-a-half of weed, as well as another five ounces in a locked container. The bill indicates retail sales are targeted to begin at the end of 2022.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- Missed: ad --> <\/p>\n<p>While the Prospect Republican mayor said he wasn\u2019t involved in the Planning &amp; Zoning Commission\u2019s decision, he does support it.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- hearst\/article\/content\/relatedStories.tpl --> <\/p>\n<section class=\"relatedStories\" data-progressive=\"true\"><\/section>\n<p><!-- e hearst\/article\/content\/relatedStories.tpl --> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not in favor of it being in town,\u201d Chatfield said Tuesday, referencing recreational marijuana.<\/p>\n<p>He said he fully supports the state\u2019s medical marijuana program.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- Missed: ad --> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have no problem with that,\u201d he said. Chatfield said he feels it\u2019s more regulated and he appreciates that it\u2019s helping those struggling with chronic issues or illnesses.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"article--content-inline\">\n<aside class=\"zone\"> <!-- hearst\/home\/mostPopular.tpl --> <!--e hearst\/home\/mostPopular.tpl --><!-- src\/business\/widgets\/hearst\/collection\/widget.tpl --> <!-- e src\/business\/widgets\/hearst\/collection\/widget.tpl --><\/aside>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Under the bill, the state\u2019s medical marijuana program \u2014 which began in 2012 and now has about 55,000 registered patients \u2014 will continue. Those patients are able to grow up to six plants at home starting later this year.<\/p>\n<p>Chatfield said he understands that even if dispensaries are banned from opening up in Prospect, that people in town could go elsewhere to buy the product.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor said he hopes the ban will lessen the number of driving under the influence incidents in connection with marijuana. He said he also hopes the ban will keep the drug away from people under the age of 21.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- Missed: ad --> <\/p>\n<p>Chatfield said he is planning to ask the town\u2019s police force to focus more on marijuana education through their D.A.R.E. programs taught to students in school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow that it\u2019s right here, right around the corner, we might have to spend a little more time on that,\u201d Chatfield said in terms of educating students on the possible effects of the drug.<\/p>\n<p>But this isn\u2019t the end of Prospect\u2019s discussion on recreational weed in town.
