Russian forces in Ukraine seized Europe\u2019s biggest nuclear power plant, <\/strong>tightened their noose around the capital and threatened more cities in the south.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">The destruction and chaos intensified as the invasion entered its second week. Thousands of residents, mostly women and children, packed the city\u2019s central train station in <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2022\/03\/04\/world\/russia-ukraine#fleeing-war-mothers-leave-ukraine-with-their-children\" title>a frantic bid to escape<\/a>, driven by fears that Russian forces were closing in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Ukraine\u2019s nuclear authority said that Russian forces were <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/04\/world\/europe\/nuclear-plant-fire.html\" title>now occupying the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant<\/a> in the south after an early-morning battle and fire there that raised worldwide alarm. It said that no changes in radiation levels had been observed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">In Russia, the government <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/04\/world\/europe\/russia-censorship-media-crackdown.html\" title>clamped down harder on news and free speech<\/a>, blocking access to Facebook and enacting a law to punish anyone spreading \u201cfalse information\u201d about its Ukraine invasion with up to 15 years in prison.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">2. Washington officials are worried that the avalanche of sanctions against Russia will prompt President Vladimir Putin to lash out.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">U.S. intelligence officials <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/03\/us\/politics\/biden-putin-sanctions.html\" title>have told the White House and Congress<\/a> that Putin tends to double down when cornered. They have described possible reactions including indiscriminate shelling of Ukrainian cities, cyberattacks directed at the U.S. financial system, nuclear threats and moves to take the war beyond Ukraine\u2019s borders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Officials are also urgently re-examining Putin\u2019s mental state, trying to determine whether his ambitions and risk-taking behaviors have been affected by two years of Covid isolation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Separately, <\/strong>Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, faced a backlash from his party after he called for<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\"> <\/span>Putin to be assassinated. He said that somebody in Russia should \u201cstep up to the plate\u201d and \u201c<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/04\/world\/europe\/lindsey-graham-putin-russia.html\" title>take this guy out<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"css-7daw59 e1mu4ftr0\"><\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">3. The February jobs report showed <\/strong><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\"><a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2022\/03\/04\/business\/jobs-report-february-2022\/jobs-report-february\" title>another month of strong gains<\/a><\/strong>, with U.S. employers adding 678,000 jobs last month, bringing the unemployment rate down to 3.8 percent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">The increase topped economists\u2019 forecasts for the second month in a row after employers dismissed a sharp increase in coronavirus cases and continued to hire. So far, at least, the labor market recovery has overcome the obstacles: Job openings are high and layoffs are low.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">The data was collected before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has shaken global financial markets and spiked energy prices. Analysts say the U.S. is less vulnerable than Europe to the economic effects of crisis, but they warn that prolonged conflict could have unpredictable repercussions.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"css-7daw59 e1mu4ftr0\"><\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">4. Similar moves have been taking place in Maryland, Delaware, Massachusetts, Connecticut, California, Oregon, Washington and New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Also as of Monday, he said, New Yorkers would not be required to show proof of vaccination to visit the city\u2019s restaurants, gyms and other venues like movie theaters \u2014 a measure some health experts have said is being removed too quickly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">5. Florida lawmakers have voted to ban abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">The bill \u2014 modeled after a similar ban in Mississippi that the U.S. Supreme Court could soon uphold and, in doing so, upend Roe v. Wade \u2014 now heads to the desk of Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has signaled his support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">The legislation, which includes no exceptions for cases of rape or incest, would <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/03\/us\/florida-abortion-ban.html\" title>severely restrict access to the procedure<\/a> in a state that has served as a refuge for women from across the South. Florida currently allows abortions until 24 weeks, with fewer restrictions than neighboring states.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">6. Russian filmmakers and artists face boycotts over the invasion of Ukraine, <\/strong>as<strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\"> <\/strong>cultural institutions grapple with difficult questions of what is appropriate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">The Russian filmmaker Kirill Sokolov, who has family in Ukraine, has denounced the war. But the Glasgow Film Festival <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/04\/movies\/film-boycott-russia-ukraine.html\" title>dropped his film anyway<\/a> because it received Russian state funding. The Cannes and Venice Film Festivals are refusing to welcome official Russian delegations or those tied to the government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Previously, the Metropolitan Opera said that its superstar soprano Anna Netrebko <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/03\/arts\/music\/anna-netrebko-met-opera-ukraine.html?\" title>would no longer perform with the company<\/a> after she refused to distance herself from Russia\u2019s president, Vladimir Putin. And the Russian maestro Valery Gergiev, a prominent Putin supporter, was <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/01\/arts\/music\/valery-gergiev-fired-munich-ukraine.html\" title>removed from his post<\/a> as chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Elsewhere<\/strong>, the president of the International Paralympic Committee broke protocol on Friday when <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/04\/sports\/olympics\/paralympics-opening-ceremony.html\" title>he denounced Russia during the opening ceremony<\/a> of the Beijing Games.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"css-7daw59 e1mu4ftr0\"><\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">7. An Italian princess from Texas is fighting an inheritance battle in a run-down Roman villa.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Princess Rita Boncompagni Ludovisi, 72, has lived multiple lives as a rancher\u2019s daughter, a congressional wife, an infotainment TV correspondent, a real estate agent and more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Her most recent act is <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/04\/world\/europe\/italy-princess-rita-boncompagni-ludovisi-jenrette.html\" title>turning out to be far less glamorous<\/a>: being involved in a grinding legal fight for the Roman villa she shared with her third husband, Prince Nicol\u00f2 Francesco Boncompagni Ludovisi, which features a Caravaggio on the ceiling.
