And breaking \u2018grass\u2019 ceilings and carving out space in a male-dominated industry is just the beginning. <\/p>\n<p>These six women are united by their compassion for others and their willingness to go against the grain. They\u2019ve persevered through countless policy changes, personal hardships, and other barriers in pursuit of the same goal: making cannabis more accessible.<\/p>\n<p>While this is by no means a list of all the trailblazing women in weed, our highlights for Women\u2019s History Month make the cannabis industry in Canada better every day. <\/p>\n<h2>Ashleigh Brown, Founder and CEO, SheCann; Consultant and Advocate<\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" alt class=\"wp-image-198419 has-ll lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/trailblazing-women-in-weed-to-follow.jpg,compress&amp;w=550 550w, https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/trailblazing-women-in-weed-to-follow.jpg,compress&amp;w=740 740w, https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/trailblazing-women-in-weed-to-follow.jpg,compress&amp;w=1100 1100w, https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/trailblazing-women-in-weed-to-follow.jpg,compress&amp;w=1480 1480w\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"h-follow-on-twitter-ashleighshecann-and-instagram-shecann\">Follow on Twitter @AshleighSheCann and Instagram @SheCann<\/h3>\n<p>If there\u2019s one thing SheCann founder and CEO Ashleigh Brown has exemplified, it\u2019s that there\u2019s power in community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Since founding SheCann, an online community and advocacy group created for and by women who use medicinal cannabis, Brown puts a lot of pressure on herself to be there for each member in the community on a personal level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t be anything but honest and open about this struggle. It is twofold: I am a disabled person working, raising a family, and advocating for myself and others. I want to be a good role model for my teenage daughters and other women,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat means being vulnerable: it <em>is<\/em> hard, but at the same time, leading SheCann is arguably the most humbling gift I could ever experience,\u201d says Brown. But it\u2019s the grace of the community, she says, \u201cthat allows me to keep going, even on the hardest days.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cHelping someone else, especially as you grieve and struggle in your own life\u2014<em>that <\/em>is a gift beyond anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><cite>Ashleigh Brown, CEO and founder of SheCann<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Brown says that the most rewarding part of leading the SheCann community has been witnessing people regain their quality of life. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen, they look around at the systemic issues like cost, taxation, and access, and ask me, \u2018What can we do about this? How can we make this system better, not only for ourselves but also for our children, and loved ones? As the founder of DiversityTalk, Ika Washington is here to do exactly as the name of her consulting firm implies: talk about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the biggest contributions that I\u2019ve made is starting conversations\u2014these difficult conversations about diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-discrimination, and anti-racism, and what these things actually mean to the cannabis industry,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Based on Washington\u2019s experience, diversity \u201cis not even a priority\u201d for a lot of companies in cannabis. \u201cBut diversity can also impact your business negatively and positively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-lighter-green-background-color has-background\">As a freelance consultant, Washington says the most difficult parts of the job are being heard by the people she\u2019s trying to reach and creating partnerships with the right companies. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting on the right platforms is so difficult; you really have to put yourself out there,\u201d she says. \u201cYou always have to be proving yourself in this space, and it makes it extremely difficult to get work done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When approaching potential clients, Washington says she hears the phrase, \u201cwe\u2019re diverse already\u201d often. \u201cOkay, that\u2019s great,\u201d she says. \u201cBut what kind of diversity? Who are they representing? What is the work culture like? Do they feel safe in those spaces? Are you addressing their needs? As the chief financial officer at B.C.-based Habitat, Kayla Mann knows firsthand how strict regulations and high taxation can affect a company\u2019s bottom line.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While being a craft producer may come with challenges, Mann says all it takes is positive feedback from consumers to remind her why she does what she does.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the moment someone tells you that your product changed their life; that it smelled like Fruit Loops. Those are the ones that make me think, \u2018Yeah, I can do this for another crop.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-lighter-green-background-color has-background\">When she\u2019s not managing finances, Mann is a professional nude photographer\u2014a practice that helps her maintain creative balance. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe live in a world that really glorifies financial knowledge, so I try to use my knowledge for a very specific type of financial work, work that has value,\u201d Mann says. \u201cSitting in front of spreadsheets all day hurts my brain, so I need the balance. It\u2019s so important to have both.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another thing that Mann says keeps her motivated is her company\u2019s commitment to sustainability. Habitat uses an aquaponics system to grow cannabis and recycles 99.7% of all water used. It\u2019s also working on implementing biofuel technology to further reduce waste.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Part of the appeal for Mann is in marrying the worlds of agriculture and cannabis, \u201cand getting people to think about cannabis as a crop and an ingestible product just like anything else we put in our bodies to keep us healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-xxl wp-block-leafly-blocks-leafly-related-articles\">\n<p><h2>Happy women\u2019s month<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Jenna Valleriani, Director of Social Impact &amp; Advocacy, Canopy Growth Corporation<\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" alt class=\"wp-image-198420 has-ll lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/trailblazing-women-in-weed-to-follow-3.jpg,compress&amp;w=550 550w, https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/trailblazing-women-in-weed-to-follow-3.jpg,compress&amp;w=740 740w, https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/trailblazing-women-in-weed-to-follow-3.jpg,compress&amp;w=1100 1100w, https:\/\/thcinct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/trailblazing-women-in-weed-to-follow-3.jpg,compress&amp;w=1480 1480w\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"h-follow-on-twitter-jennav5-and-instagram-jennabobennaa\">Follow on Twitter @jennav5 and Instagram @jennabobennaa<\/h3>\n<p>As the director of social impact and advocacy at Canopy Growth, Jenna Valleriani is responsible for leading the company\u2019s strategic social purpose and community investment activities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m there to fund, drive, and collaborate on partnerships that support equity, justice, and positive community impact,\u201d says Valleriani, who previously worked for non-profit organizations such as Canadians Students For Sensible Drug Policy (CSSDP) and the National Institute for Cannabis Health and Education (NICHE) Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Valleriani says her work at Canopy goes far beyond identifying organizations or projects and cutting cheques; \u201cit\u2019s about undoing the harms of prohibition, and operationalizing that to prove that we\u2019re putting our money where our mouth is.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThe reality is, coming from the non-profit side, there are so many great ideas and so much work that needs to be done. The funding to get that work done is always so challenging,\u201d she says. \u201cSo now to be on the other side, we\u2019re able to fund really incredibly projects.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There are currently several projects Valleriani is excited to see Canopy lend its support to. At Greenleaf, she recently launched an <a href=\"https:\/\/greenleafmc.ca\/group-classes\/ask-the-expert-cannabis-series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Ask The Expert<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>series with long-time cannabis cultivator Fonda Betts, giving patients the opportunity to learn about a range of different subjects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatient education is invaluable in improving compliance, reducing adverse drug events or side effects, and maximizing benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MacCallum has high hopes for the future of Canada\u2019s medical cannabis program.
