The Senate voted unanimously to pass the bill in March.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/the-science-behind-the-dea-s-long-war-on-marijuana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported for decades<\/a> that marijuana\u2019s federal Schedule I status\u2014designating it as a drug as dangerous as heroin\u2014blocks basic drug trials. A generation of patients has undertaken those trials on themselves. (<a href=\"https:\/\/eastbayexpress.com\/california-pot-patients-report-overwhelming-satisfaction-with-plant-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ninety-two percent<\/a> of medical cannabis users reported efficacy in one state survey in 2014.)<\/p>\n<p>Currently, 38 states have legalized cannabis medically or for all adults, yet \u2018marijuana\u2019 remains a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.com\/news\/politics\/new-lawsuit-aims-to-force-dea-to-reschedule-marijuana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Schedule I<\/a> substance.<\/p>\n<p>The new Act\u2014sponsored by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), and eight other senators\u2014doesn\u2019t change weed\u2019s Schedule I status. But it does force the federal government to allow more researchers to grow medical cannabis, and allows doctors to talk about pot without fear of losing their medical license, as well as other modest tweaks.<\/p>\n<p>About 91% of Americans support medical marijuana legalization, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2021\/04\/16\/americans-overwhelmingly-say-marijuana-should-be-legal-for-recreational-or-medical-use\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pew Research finds<\/a>. Yet the CBD research expansion act came up for a vote, passed and then died in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The House of Representatives also passed a full-scale legalization bill\u2014the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.com\/news\/politics\/congress-just-voted-to-legalize-marijuana-via-the-more-act-again-heres-what-it-means\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MORE Act<\/a>\u2014last week.<\/p>\n<p>About 68% of Americans support full legalization. But Sen. Feinstein\u2014a long-serving Democrat representing the largest legal cannabis market on the planet, which did <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.com\/news\/industry\/cannabis-jobs-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$5.1 billion in legal sales<\/a> last year\u2014is focused on further research, <em>not<\/em> legalizing it federally.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.com\/news\/politics\/the-dianne-feinstein-mystery-why-is-she-californias-last-prohibitionist\" class=\"wp-block-leafly-blocks-leafly-single-inline-block leafly-inline-related-story\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"border border-deep-green-alt border-l-0 border-r-0 my-xl p-md font-bold\">\n<p>Related<\/p>\n<p>The Dianne Feinstein Mystery: Why Is She California\u2019s Last Prohibitionist?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurrent rules and regulations make it hard for researchers to study how marijuana and marijuana-derived medications can best be used to treat various conditions,\u201d said Sen. Feinstein, in a release. \u201cThis important legislation will cut the red tape around the research process, helping get FDA-approved, marijuana-derived medications safely to patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Policy experts note that marijuana has been studied for decades, and has shown medical efficacy, with a lower abuse profile than prescription drugs. And yet Republican Sen. Grassley cheered the chance for more such research in a release.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.com\/news\/politics\/congress-just-voted-to-legalize-marijuana-via-the-more-act-again-heres-what-it-means\" class=\"wp-block-leafly-blocks-leafly-single-inline-block leafly-inline-related-story\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"border border-deep-green-alt border-l-0 border-r-0 my-xl p-md font-bold\">\n<p>Related<\/p>\n<p>Congress just legalized marijuana via the MORE Act\u2014again.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis bipartisan bill is critical to better understanding the marijuana plant and its potential benefits and side effects,\u201d Grassley said in a statement. \u201cIt will empower the FDA to analyze CBD and medical marijuana products in a safe and responsible way so that the American public can decide whether to utilize them in the future based on sound scientific data.
