“It may have been there for many years, but obviously once it’s been uncovered it’s our duty to make sure it’s safe for travelers and that’s what we’re going to do this afternoon – fill it with concrete.”<\/p>\n
Translink today informed commuters that all CBD buses were delayed due to congestion, with some passengers saying their buses would be diverted to nearby train stations due to “massive backlogs in the city “.<\/p>\n Some commuters were stuck on buses for more than an hour, while others were turned away from boarding buses at some places.<\/p>\n Police motorbikes were dispatched to Adelaide Street and George Street to try and get traffic flowing.<\/p>\n There were also complaints of drivers blocking intersections, compounding the problem.<\/p>\n Tram and Bus Union assistant secretary of state Tom Brown said the area under Adelaide Street may have been over-excavated.<\/p>\n “I am informed by a very reliable source that they have actually over-excavated,” he said.<\/p>\n Brown said traffic congestion throughout the morning had also resulted in bus drivers being verbally abused.<\/p>\n \u201cBasically all the drivers on the network are running late … it’s going to cause chaos for at least the rest of the day.<\/p>\n “Our driver abuse levels are already at unacceptable levels,” he said.<\/p>\n “Drivers have been instructed to drop people off at the nearest train stations … so people can basically get into the city on their own way, and that’s not good.”<\/p>\n“Emergency works” contributed to the delays.
