Another unit liberated a village last week.

On the rolling plains of eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region, soldiers and commanders point to these modest gains as a measurable result of Ukraine’s strategy of publicly and frequently telegraphing its intentions to attack Russia for another war front: southern Ukraine.

The Russian military, they say, has been diverting troops south to counter the Ukrainian onslaught, reducing the intensity of fighting in the east and allowing Ukraine to regain chunks of ground there.

Western military analysts have noted the diversion of Russian forces and a reduction in violence in Donbas, which had been the focus of the Russian military since it failed to capture the capital, Kyiv, last spring. Across the region, the intensity of Russian artillery fire has decreased. In narrow stretches of the front near the towns of Bakhmut, Pisky and Avdiivka, Russian attacks have persisted.

Ukrainian military vehicles near the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, where Russian attacks continue.Credit…David Guttenfelder for The New York Times

Fighting in the Ukraine war is effectively split between two theaters, the east and the south, with Ukraine seeking to slow or halt Russian advances in the east while counterattacking in the south.

Where to concentrate forces has become a dilemma facing both armies, leaving commanders in a guessing game about the other side’s intentions as the summer has turned into a period of feints and declarations rare public announcements of military operations planned by both sides in the Donbass and southern Ukraine.

The Russians are most vulnerable, in Ukraine’s view, in the territory they hold on the western side of the wide Dnipro River. In recent weeks, the Ukrainian military has hit two bridges used for resupply and on Saturday hit the spans again as Russian engineers tried to repair them.

Russian forces have been strengthening positions in the south, Britain’s Ministry of Defense said in an assessment of the war on Saturday, and “Ukrainian forces are targeting bridges, ammunition depots and rail links with increasing frequency.” The reinforcements could defend or prevent the Ukrainian attack with an offensive of their own.

The effect of all this in the eastern theater of the conflict became apparent in recent weeks, said Yuriy Bereza, the commander of the Dnipro-1 unit of the Ukrainian National Guard, which is fighting out of the eastern city from Sloviansk.

“We have reached a parity situation” in the war in eastern Ukraine, Bereza said.

As with everything in this war, much remains opaque, and at least some analysts say the slowdown in the east has more to do with Russia’s need to rebuild its forces, and less to do with dividing its attention with the south .

After capturing the cities of Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk in late June, the Russian military declared what it called an operational pause to regroup and rearm. Independent analysts had said the Russian force suffered heavy casualties and units would need to be reconstituted.

Mr. Bereza also credited the appearance on the battlefield of American-supplied high-mobility artillery rocket systems, which accurately struck far behind Russian lines, for silencing Russia’s artillery. The systems, known as HIMARS, arrived about a month ago, just as the counteroffensive was ramping up in the south.

“The first time I heard a HIMARS release it was like music to my ears,” he said. “It is the most beautiful music for Ukrainian soldiers.”

Source link

A soldier from the Ukrainian Army’s 93rd Brigade looks out from inside a bunker along the front line near the Ukrainian town of Barvinkove.Credit…David Guttenfelder for The New York Times ESLOVIANSK, Ukraine — At one point on the front line, Ukrainian soldiers crawled forward on their bellies 50 meters at a time, digging new trenches at each stop.
