Russian authorities have raided the home of a former state television journalist who resigned after protesting the war in Ukraine on air.<\/p>\n
Marina Ovsyannikova gained international attention the following March breaks into a Russian state television studio<\/strong>his then employer, to denounce the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n She was holding a sign that said, “Stop the war, don’t believe the propaganda, you’re being lied to here.”<\/p>\n She was then the editor of the evening news program Vremya, but after leaving her job, Ms. Ovsyannikova became something of an activist, organizing anti-war pickets and speaking out against the conflict.<\/p>\n she was fined for violating protest laws<\/strong> and later took to social media to condemn those responsible for the ongoing war. She was fined 30,000 rubles (around \u00a3223.40 at the time).<\/p>\n He later told Sky Moscow correspondent Diana Magnay that he does not regret his actions facing hostility from all sides<\/strong> – including his family.<\/p>\n Moscow has now opened a criminal case against her, accused of spreading false information about the Russian armed forces, her lawyer said on social media.<\/p>\n If convicted, she faces up to 15 years in prison.<\/p>\n Her lawyer Dmitry Zakhvatov told independent news site Meduza that the case is likely related to a protest Ovsyannikova staged last month, holding a banner that read “(Russian President Vladimir) Putin is a murderer, his soldiers they are fascists.”<\/p>\n Read more: Russian families flee south in ‘panic’ after bridge attacks – live updates<\/strong><\/p>\n After the attack, Ms. Ovsyannikova is expected to be brought to the Investigative Committee for questioning, she told Telegram.<\/p>\n She has been fined twice more in recent weeks for disparaging the military in a critical Facebook post and for comments she made in court where opposition figure Ilya Yashin was detained pending trial on charges of spreading false information about the military.<\/p>\n
