TMC leader Anubrata Mondal arrested by CBI in cattle smuggling case

CBI at the residence of Anubrata Mondal

Calcutta: The CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) arrested TMC strongman Anubrata Mondal on Thursday, days after another summons by the central agency was skipped in the cattle smuggling case. Mondal was arrested from his residence in Bolpur, West Bengal. He skipped several appointments due to health issues. However, a doctor at a private hospital has sensationally claimed that he was forced to advise bed rest. The CBI had issued ten summons to Mondal but he appeared only on two occasions.

This is the second major arrest by the central agency after Partha Chatterjee, who is currently in jail for his alleged role in the teacher recruitment scam. Anubrata Mondal is the Birbhum district president of TMC.

In June, the CBI arrested Mondal’s personal bodyguard Saigal Hossain during its investigation into the case. Hossain was arrested by the central agency after prolonged interrogation. The agency official said Hossain could not give any satisfactory explanation for the huge assets he possessed. “He gets a fixed salary every month. We have found disparities in Hossain’s versions,” an official was quoted as saying by PTI.

After Hossain was arrested by the CBI, BJP leader Keya Ghosh tweeted that apart from owning two houses in Murshidabad, the Mondol bodyguard had three flats in Kolkata and a staggering amount of gold among other assets. Saigal Hossain is an officer of the Bengal Police.

Reacting to Mondal’s arrest, BJP’s Amit Malviya said it was high time the TMC strongman was arrested as “he was a criminal”. Malviya claimed that till now Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was protecting her.

“Mamata Banerjee sponsors criminals like Anubroto Mondal. As Chief Minister and Home Minister of West Bengal, she gives state protection to those who operate crime and extortion syndicates under her watch. Partha Chatterjee or Anubroto Mondal, the buck stops with Mamata Banerjee,” he said. he said in a tweet.

The case of illegal smuggling was first discovered by the ED. Later, the CBI filed the case and the TMC leader’s name emerged.
