Catalytic converter thefts are skyrocketing in some areas of Connecticut. Data obtained by News 12 from local police departments reveals that some of the numbers have already doubled from last year’s incidents.
Figures show that many towns and cities in the area are not immune to this problem, and many times catalytic converter thefts even occur in broad daylight.
The data shows cities and towns in the area that have large increases in catalytic converter thefts.
Greenwich reported 41 cases this year, Stamford 149 and Milford 414.
AAA says it’s seeing many older vehicles being targeted, ending up without full insurance coverage.
“It’s definitely worth calling your insurance company,” said Alec Slatky of AAA Connecticut. “That would normally fall under comprehensive coverage, so those non-collision events that are out of your control, and that’s something we really recommend people have.”
Police departments say these incidents are difficult to prevent, but many people are still looking for what they can do to prevent it from happening.
