Local diners can now spend more time outdoors thanks to the installation of two dining decks outside two popular Launceston restaurants.
In June, the City of Launceston announced that Inside Cafe on Paterson Street and the Schnitty Bar on Invermay Road had been selected to take part in a 12-month trial of the portable outdoor decks following a competitive bidding process. expression of interest
The trial, which is being supported by the State Government through a $50,000 ‘Ready for Business’ grant, will see the two decks provide outdoor dining facilities where they previously did not it was possible, or at least very restricted.
The decks were manufactured by Victorian company Events 720 and were originally due to arrive in Launceston in September.
However, the decks arrived four weeks early and, to the delight of both companies, were installed on Friday just in time for what was a very busy weekend.
Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten congratulated both businesses and said he hoped the decks would provide a much-needed boost to diners over the next 12 months.
“Although there are now more than 60 businesses offering alfresco dining options in Launceston, there are some areas where alfresco dining was previously not possible due to a lack of footpath space ” said Mayor van Zetten.
“These portable dining shelters will address both businesses by allowing a shelter to be located in street parking right at the front door.
“While Launceston has a wide range of businesses with outdoor dining, including cafes, restaurants and takeaways, there are opportunities to increase economic activity and vibrancy by reimagining the way we use infrastructure and public spaces in the future.
“We hope this trial in two quite different and challenging locations will provide insights into how we can support hospitality businesses to deliver a more vibrant city for everyone.
“I would also like to thank the State Government for its support through this grant, which has made all this possible.”
