Landslide blocks part of Wellington CBD road, 12 homes evacuated

Twelve homes have been evacuated after a landslide blocked part of The Terrace in central Wellington on Monday afternoon.

The slide happened towards the southern end of the road, which is closed between Buller St and Ghuznee St.

The fire trucks that were dispatched have been stopped overnight and will return in the morning to reassess the risk and damage in the area.

Firefighters and Emergency Teams responded to the landslide at 3:42 p.m.

Wellington City Council has evacuated 12 homes at risk of damage from the landslide.

Since many of the evacuated homes are flats, around 20 people have had to leave their homes.

Alternative accommodation has been made available to those affected, but most are staying with friends and family.

At this stage, the council understands that no one has been injured.

The affected area of ​​the road is expected to be closed overnight.

Drivers and pedestrians are asked to stay clear.

There were concerns about a gas main break in the area, but the problem was resolved by 8pm by crews on site.

There were 11 landslides in the Wellington area on Monday alone.

Wellington City Council has said slips on steeper parts of the city are becoming more common and has asked people to take care when travelling.
