It’s been more than a year and a half since the United States were crowned champions at the 2021 World Juniors, but here, on the unusual date in August, the country begins its quest to repeat as gold medalist.
The 2022 USA World Junior competition begins tonight as the defending champions take on Germany at Rogers Place in Edmonton.

It’s a unique time of year to play the tournament, but that’s because the original tournament was canceled after three days of competition due to COVID-19. The IIHF decided to restart the annual event for August and now, instead of taking a break from their regular seasons, these teenagers are tasked with playing some of their first competitive hockey in months.
“I think the challenge is to get guys to play good, detailed playoff hockey,” USA head coach Nate Leaman said before the game. “Usually for this tournament, guys are halfway through the season, so they’re ready, they’re in shape. There’s a lot more detail to their game. We’ve got to get there. to get there quickly.”
The USA enters the game with 11 wins and one loss against Germany all-time at the World Juniors. The Americans are aiming for their seventh consecutive victory against the Germans.

USA v Germany result
Follower of Matt Knees
At each game, we’ll highlight one Team USA player to follow during the matchup.
The first is Matt Knies, a forward from the University of Minnesota. He is a 2021 second-round draft pick of the Maple Leafs who skated for the United States in the 2022 Winter Olympics, recording a goal and an assist in four games with the club.
A skilled winger who is a big body (6-3, 205), he constantly uses his frame to create space and separation from opponents. The Golden Gopher should be one of the best forwards for Team USA in Edmonton.
1st period
A very quiet spell from Knies to start the game. While the U.S. had control throughout, it didn’t get much of the puck and the only offensive opportunity it had was off the rush when it caught a pass down its sideline and ripped it off. I would expect to see him more involved in the game as the game goes on.

2nd period
11:33 p.m — Germany opts to use their coach’s challenge. Back to the review let’s go.
11:31 p.m — GOAL! After a lengthy review, officials determine it is a target. Coronato gets the goal and it’s 5-0 with 8:30 left in the second.
11:23 p.m — A scramble in front of the net and play finally stops, but the puck is in the night. The refs initially waved the goal on the ice for a high post as Matt Knies looked like he might have hit the puck over the crossbar, but it also appears to have hit Quapp in the head. Coronato was the one who put the puck in the net, but we’ll see what the call ends up being as the officials review.
11:06 p.m — GOAL! Less than two minutes and the USA’s lead is doubled. This time it’s Red Savage who nails the puck past Quapp off the rebound. Riley Duran had come forward on the rush, passed the puck off the boards to himself and got the shot on net and Savage was able to grab the rebound while on the ice.
With a name like that, of course it’s going strong on the web. 💪@redsavage_19 | #WorldJuniors 🇺🇸 pic.twitter.com/jSssFDQ1ZC

11:06 p.m — GOAL! Just seconds after Germany’s big kill, the USA gets their third goal of the night thanks to Landon Slaggert. The U.S. got into it after Quapp moved and got out of his crease, but couldn’t put him down. Finally, Slaggert slides the puck from the goal line through Quapp’s legs for the score.
End 1st period: USA 2, Germany 0
10:47 p.m — End of the 1st, it’s 2-0 USA. A fantastic first period for the Americans, who controlled the game throughout and if it wasn’t for some strong play from Quapp, it certainly could have been worse. Germany is trying to slow the US down with their physicality, but the US is playing it. They also have time left in Rossmy major to start the second period.
10:42 p.m — GOAL! After the first power play unit had some excellent chances, the second unit rushes in and Logan Cooley finishes the play. Matthew Coronato hit him with a cutting pass into the night and while Cooley’s first attempt was blocked by Quapp, his second was not denied. USA remains in power 2-0.

10:36 p.m — Another penalty awarded to Germany when Bennet Rossmy hits Dominic James high. Rossmy’s elbow goes up, but James is positioned lower and it doesn’t look like the head contact was intentional. However, after the officials’ review, they have determined that it will be a five-minute overtime for Rossmy and a game misconduct.
10:29 p.m — GOAL! The U.S. finally gets past Quapp on their 15th shot of the period as Luke Hughes takes a shot from the point and the German goalie never sees it. Some excellent screens up front as Quapp looked left and hit him right. 6:21 left and USA up 1-0, Germany still hasn’t had a shot on goal.

10:23 p.m — Mackie Samoskevich was seething as the United States had maintained offensive zone pressure for 90 seconds. The game ends on a crease violation, but the Americans are doing everything but scoring early. Germany has yet to register a shot on goal as the USA’s transition game stifled any rush they had.
10:19 p.m — The first half of the period has been all of the United States. They’re faster, they’re causing turnovers, and they’re winning almost every 1v1 battle. They have nothing to show for it yet because Quapp has been strong for Germany.
10:12 p.m — The USA heads to the power play as Germany’s Maciej Rutkowski is assessed two minutes for hooking. First chance for the Americans to take a lead.
10:11 p.m — First shift of the game, and Landon Slaggert has a great opportunity. Thomas Bordeleau’s toe-drag draws the defender, leaving Slaggert open in front, but it misses the high net.
10:10 p.m — Puck is down and we have action!
Before the match
21:15 – Here are the lineups for the USA against Germany in their first World Junior match. It’s Kaiden Mbereko in net for the United States against Germany’s Nikita Quapp. Especially not Luca Münzenberger, an Oilers prospect and Germany’s top defender. Not sure why, but this is a massive hit to their blue line.
