Plan to fix teacher shortages; Report pinpoints mortgage stress hot spots; Police investigate Gold Coast stabbing; NSW reports 10,515 new COVID-19 cases, 29 deaths; Warning about Chinese ‘stranglehold’ on world economy

China has shown it can unleash a “grip” on the global economy with its military exercises off Taiwan, Nine Network political editor Chris Uhlmann warned today.

Today said the war games in recent days showed that Chinese military forces could quickly deploy a blockade of Taiwan, a key producer of technology products such as microchips.

“China surrounded Taiwan this week and 90 percent of those chips are coming from there.

“Imagine if China had a hold on this market and we can’t do this kind of thing quickly in other parts of the world.”

Uhlmann was speaking after China’s ambassador to Australia addressed the National Press Club in Canberra yesterday.

Xiao Qian said Beijing would never give up its claims on the self-governing island, but hinted at a possible diplomatic reset with Australia.

However, Uhlmann said China should be judged for its actions.

“I think China is going against its word, that is, it has occupied and militarized the South China Sea in defiance of international law.”
