The full Sturgeon Supermoon put on a dazzling display around the world when it rose on Thursday night.
The name comes from the Native Americans, as it occurs at the end of summer and the beginning of the harvest season, when tribes in certain regions would catch sturgeon fish in large numbers.
Supermoons occur when the Moon is full as it coincides with its “perigee,” or the point at which its orbit brings Earth’s natural satellite closest to the planet, and appear nearly a third brighter than normal and more d ‘a bigger ten.
The Sturgeon Moon is considered the fourth consecutive supermoon after the Buck Moon in July, the Strawberry Moon in June and the Flower Moon in May.
Also, for those who enjoy a celestial spectacle, the Perseid meteor shower, one of the most popular of the year, will peak Thursday night into Friday morning.
The next supermoon won’t be until August 2023, according to NASA.
