A man has been arrested after shots were fired in the check-in area of Canberra Airport in Australia.
The airport was evacuated and planes were grounded for about three hours Sunday afternoon while police recovered the firearm and policed the area.
There were no injuries, but footage from the scene showed bullet holes in the windows of the terminal.
Police said the man in custody is “believed to be solely responsible,” although his motivation is unclear.
ACT Police Detective Acting Superintendent Dave Craft said the suspect was sitting near the glass windows in the check-in area.
“After about five minutes, this man removed the firearm from his possession and discharged approximately five rounds,” he said.
“From what I can see from the crime scene, the man shot through the glass of the terminal.
“There were no shots fired at individuals … customers or staff.”
“The look on people’s faces was pretty terrifying”
Australian Broadcasting Corp reporter Lily Thomson was at the airport and heard the shots, realizing something was wrong when people started shouting “run”.
“I saw this grandmother with a baby and the fear on her face and I knew it was something serious,” she said.
“So we all ran and I stayed with the grandma and her baby and hid behind an information desk. We were there for a couple of minutes until security told us to evacuate towards the parking lot.
“Everybody was hiding behind the chairs and people were running.
“It was terrifying. We didn’t know what was going on. The look on people’s faces was pretty terrifying.”
