Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Wednesday that he was buying English soccer club Manchester United Plc.
“I’m buying Manchester United welcome,” Musk, known for his irreverent tweets, posted on the microblogging platform.
While it wasn’t immediately clear if the billionaire investor was serious about pursuing a deal, his tweet took the internet by surprise.
The American Glazer family, who control the club, have faced the wrath of Manchester United fans due to the team’s struggles on the pitch – with the Old Trafford-based club currently bottom of the Premier League after a 4-0 thrashing. of Brentford in an away match.
In recent years, Manchester United fans have protested against the Glazers, who bought the club for £790 million ($955.51 million) in 2005.
As of Tuesday, Manchester United had a market capitalization of $2.08 billion.

Musk’s tweet garnered tens of thousands of likes within minutes and prompted hilarious responses from social media users.
“If they keep playing the way they’ve been, you’ll get a discount,” one user wrote.
Another replied: “United players will finally be dangerous in space.”
Many pointed to his recent flip-flop on the deal with Twitter. Earlier this year, Musk offered to buy the social media company, but backed out of the deal, claiming the social media platform has a larger number of “spam bots” and accounts false than what Twitter had revealed.
Twitter has sued Musk, claiming the billionaire is using concerns about spam and bot accounts as an excuse to back out of the deal.
