It was a tough game for Syracuse girls soccer on Sunday, coming off a 2-1 win Thursday. He would be defeated 6-0 by Connecticut. The Huskies were relentless in the first half and put the game away early. With the loss, the Orange drops to 1-1 on the season.
One of the many things to praise Syracuse from their last game against New Hampshire was how aggressive they played. They played on the attack, always trying to find the back of the net. This type of team just didn’t find its way on the field when it needed to.
UConn was both the aggressor and in control of this game early on. In the first minute, the Huskies had a terrible attempt at a cross that almost ended in a goal. ACC Network broadcasters Philip Galati IV and Jared Johnston during the occasion talked about how the Huskies communicated and how strong they were. They also made sure to press the orange wings. The Syracuse back four played pretty compact which allowed the Huskies to take advantage of the full width of the field.
It didn’t help the Orange’s cause when Michaela Walsh had to leave the game after just 17 minutes. He had already recorded two saves. Sierra Giorgio was his replacement and faced six shots on net. It was high quality chances that the Huskies beat her. Jessica Mazo scored first on an Orange baseline error. It was a beautiful finish as the shot broke and kissed the crossbar before going in.
The second goal came just over two minutes later when Emma Zaccagnini cleared the ball outside the box following a corner and was able to sneak it into the bottom right corner of the net. Giorgio had just made an incredible flat save that gave away the corner.
In the 26th minute it was a scorer from outside the 18 by Jada Konte to make it 3-0. A move back to his right lost the defense and gave him space to fire a shot that went just under the crossbar. The high pressure from the Huskies would continue as Chioma Okafor stole the ball, beat Giorgio who came off his line and found the back of the open net.
The final goal of the first half came in the 41st and was the only assisted goal of the game. Cara Elmendorf took the corner, the fifth Huskie corner of the half, and Abbey Jones would finish it off.

Uconn would outscore Syracuse 14-4 in the first half. When the Orange had a chance to adjust and talk about what happened in the first, they settled down and played higher up the field. The Huskies put the Orange on their backs and had no answer in the first 45 minutes.
Syracuse would only be outshot 10-9 in the second half, though the Huskies’ shots were more frequent. Shea Vanderbosch was in goal in the second half and made five saves while allowing just one goal. Maddie Carroll scored that only goal. A broken pass over the orange baseline found Carroll and she didn’t disappoint with a finish into the net.
Chelsea Domond was the most threatening for the orange as she fired four shots and three of them were on target. Erin Flurey and Pauline Machtens also put one in the frame.
Syracuse will have until Thursday to get that game out of the way before playing Lafayette at home. This match will be at 20:00 on ACCN Extra.
