Analysis: Reeves on board with reviving initiative process – CT Post

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves says he would support efforts to revive the initiative process, months after the state Supreme Court ruled that the process was outdated and invalid. The issue could come up during the legislative session that begins in January. “I think that access to the ballot is important,” Republican Reeves said in response to questions at a news conference last week. “I don’t think that one person writing a 2 or 3 million dollar check on any one issue to put it in our state constitution is the correct way to do it,” he…

The Day – On-line gambling is legislature’s latest mistake – News from southeastern Connecticut – theday.com

The Day – On-line gambling is legislature’s latest mistake – News from southeastern Connecticut – theday.com

How sad and pathetic that our legislature continues to ignore the clear lessons of the past when it comes to “legalizing” harmful behavior. With on-line gambling now legal, we will see personal bankruptcy filings soar, families losing their homes and possessions because mommy or daddy cannot control their gambling habits, crime rising so gamblers can support their habits, etc. Exactly like alcohol, tobacco sales and now, legalized marijuana usage, on-line gambling will take far more value out of the economy and drastically reduce productivity than their relative few jobs and the small tax revenues brought in. Have not even addressed…

Hinesville, Ga. — Maggie Towne quit her job as a hotel front-desk manager because the pandemic taught her she could squeeze by without her paycheck. Now home with her kids, Towne says her life is much improved, but at the La Quinta hotel she left, an exodus of housekeepers and front-desk workers forced owner Hasit Patel to close the swimming pool and fitness center and sharply reduce room cleaning. Fannie Lou Brewton left her job as a cook because she didn’t want to be around so many people anymore. She realized, she said, that “I did enough.” She’s delighted that…

And while federal prohibition remains in place, the year saw major movement toward reform on the federal level, including a number of new legalization bills in Congress and slow, steady progress on cannabis banking. In a year marked by partisan divisions, the year also saw more GOP lawmakers than ever take the lead on cannabis, helping craft and introduce…

Pakistani Government Official Harvests Nation’s First Legal Hemp Crops – Marijuana Moment

Another study has found that decriminalizing marijuana not only significantly decreases arrests for possession overall but that it also reduces racial disparities in any remaining arrests. Researchers at the University of California, San Diego examined FBI Uniform Crime Report data for 37 states between 2000 and 2019 to determine the impact of decriminalization policies. “Minorities often bear the brunt of unequal enforcement of drug laws,” the paper, which was published this month in the journal Social Science & Medicine,” notes. “In the U.S., Blacks have been disproportionately more likely to be arrested for cannabis possession than Whites despite a similar…
