The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday approved a package of spending legislation that contains measures to provide protections for banks that work with state-legal cannabis businesses and allow the legalization of marijuana sales in Washington, D.C., among many other drug policy provisions. The appropriations legislation and attached reports also direct federal government agencies to reconsider policies that fire employees for using cannabis in compliance with state law, criticize restrictive hemp regulations, encourage CBD to be allowed in foods and urge expanded research on marijuana and other substances. While not every included provision is pro-reform—and some measures that activists wanted…

NEWTOWN – Leaders here are not alone in their haste to preempt Connecticut’s marijuana legalization law that goes into effect on Thursday, but Newtown will be the first municipality in the area to put a proposed ban on cannabis establishments before the public. Newtown’s public hearing on Thursday to ban all cannabis establishments including medicinal dispensaries will give residents their first chance to weigh in on marijuana legalization since June 22, when Gov. Ned Lamont signed into law “a national model for regulating adult-use cannabis.” Ridgefield and Danbury leaders have announced their own intentions to forestall recreational marijuana businesses from…

Outdoor weed parks? They may be coming to a city near you. Included in the law that legalized recreational use of cannabis is a provision that will require some Connecticut cities to create outdoor spaces specifically intended for using marijuana. The law mandates that cities with a population greater than 50,000 “must designate a location in the municipality where public consumption is allowed,” according to an Office of Legislative Research analysis of the bill. There are 19 cities in Connecticut that fit that population requirement. It’s not so simple, though. That provision only applies to municipalities that choose to regulate…

Connecticut Governor Andrew Ned Lamont signed into law on June 22, 2021 An Act Concerning Responsible and Equitable Regulation of Adult-Use Cannabis (the Act), which essentially legalized the recreational use of marijuana in the state. Among other things, it allows adults 21 and older to personally possess up to 1.5 ounces of marijuana or up to 5 ounces of marijuana in a locked container. It also permits for the expungement of certain marijuana-related convictions; sets up a framework for businesses to apply for grow, manufacture, retail and distribution licenses; and imposes certain restrictions on employers and protections for employees. While…

STAMFORD — Starting on July 1, Connecticut is officially weed-friendly. But that doesn’t mean Stamfordites should expect dispensaries on every corner. The long road toward buying cannabis in town involves plenty of state oversight and local decision-making at the hands of municipal zoning commissions about who can do what and where. The basic rules are simple. Thanks to the new law, which Gov. Ned Lamont signed last week, people 21 and older can have up to 1.5 ounces of cannabis. In a locked container at home or in a car, adults can have up to five ounces. For vendors, the…
