Exchange: Arizona colleges get windfall from marijuana sales – CT Insider

PHOENIX (AP) — More marijuana sales mean more funding for community colleges throughout Arizona. The state’s 10 community college districts got a windfall of over $31 million from big spending on recreational marijuana in the first year of sales in 2021. The Proposition 207 voter initiative that legalized recreational marijuana created an excise tax of 16% and required the state distribute about one-third of that money to community colleges, with the rest mostly to public safety departments and transportation, health and criminal justice programs. Colleges can use the funds for workforce development, STEM and certain other education programs, the Arizona…

When Her Husband Said He Wanted to Die, Amy Bloom Listened – The New York Times

The pandemic arrived “like the snow at the end of ‘The Dead,’” Bloom said, referring to James Joyce’s classic story — a few flakes at first, then blanketing everything. Bloom’s daughter, daughter-in-law and granddaughter came from Brooklyn to ride out the storm. Bloom kept writing in the afternoons. She laughed. “My kids tease me, they say, ‘You expected to be sitting by the pond, in gray gauze, staring into the distance.’” Instead she was absorbed by work and the rhythms of family life. By September 2020, Bloom had a draft to share with her longtime editor, Kate Medina, the executive…

HBJ’s CT Cannabis Insider series – Hartford Business Journal

Connecticut, in recent years, hasn’t been known for attracting out-of-state companies, especially when state incentives aren’t involved. Many companies, from large national players like Massachusetts-based Curaleaf and Green Thumb Industries in Chicago, to small purveyors like Bay State-based Green Meadows, are working on business plans…

Washington lawmakers urge halt to hemp-derived THC in state – CT Insider

SEATTLE (AP) — Washington lawmakers are making a last-ditch attempt to block intoxicating, synthetically derived cannabis products, including gummy candies and vape oil, from being sold at gas stations, convenience stores and smoke shops after earlier bills failed. “These are being sold right now, without any regulation, without any oversight,” said Democratic Sen. Karen Keiser. “It’s a public health danger and a threat, and it needs to be removed.” With about two weeks left in the legislative session, Keiser and Republican Mark Schoesler introduced a measure Friday to ban the products both within Washington’s legal marijuana industry and outside it….
